Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Sunshine Coast

Sunshine Coast — a region worth exploring

The Sunshine Coast stretches over 60 kilometres of coastline north of Brisbane, from Caloundra in the south to Noosa Heads in the north, making it one of Queensland's most rewarding regions to explore on four wheels. The Glass House Mountains, a cluster of 13 volcanic peaks rising sharply from flat coastal plains, create a dramatic backdrop as you drive inland, while the Noosa Everglades — one of only two everglades systems on the planet — offer a quieter, waterway-rich contrast to the surf beaches. From Mooloolaba to Noosa, the coastal road covers roughly 35 kilometres of beachside towns, each with its own character, from the family-friendly shores of Kings Beach to the boutique dining scene along Hastings Street. Head west and you reach the Blackall Range, where the hinterland towns of Maleny and Montville sit about 30 kilometres from the coast, connected by winding roads through subtropical rainforest. The region suits both compact campervans for coastal hopping and larger motorhomes for extended stays at well-equipped holiday parks. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across the Sunshine Coast, choosing from a range of vehicles that match your travel style — whether that means a weekend at a beachside campsite or a longer loop through the hinterland and back.

Best time to visit

The Sunshine Coast enjoys a subtropical climate, so you can plan a campervan trip in any season with confidence. April to November brings warm, dry days ideal for beach stops and hinterland walks. The Noosa Eat and Drink Festival in May is a highlight for food lovers, while the Caloundra Music Festival in September fills the southern end of the coast with live performances. Summer (December to March) is peak season, so booking your Yescapa motorhome early gives you the best choice of vehicles and competitive peer-to-peer pricing. Campsite availability is strongest midweek year-round.

The best road trips in Sunshine Coast

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

Coastal Villages Loop

80 km 3–5 days

Start in Caloundra and follow the coast north through Mooloolaba and Coolum Beach to Noosa Heads, covering around 80 km. This short route suits a campervan perfectly, with beachside holiday parks at nearly every stop and time to linger at Noosa National Park's coastal walking tracks.

Hinterland Heritage Drive

120 km 3–6 days

Wind through the Blackall Range from Landsborough up to Maleny and Montville, then loop back via Mapleton and Nambour. At roughly 120 km, this route passes Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve and its rainforest boardwalk. Ideal for a compact campervan on narrow mountain roads.

Noosa Everglades and Beyond

280 km 5–8 days

Head north from Noosa into the Cooloola section of the Great Sandy National Park, then return via Gympie and the Mary Valley. This 280 km route takes in the Noosa Everglades, coloured sands at Rainbow Beach, and heritage rail towns. A motorhome with good clearance is recommended for unsealed sections.

Sunshine Coast to Fraser Coast

350 km 5–8 days

Drive north from Maroochydore along the Bruce Highway to Hervey Bay, gateway to Fraser Island, covering about 350 km. Stop at the Ginger Factory in Yandina and the historic town of Maryborough. Campervan-friendly parks line the route, with powered sites widely available.

Great Beach Drive Adventure

500 km 7–11 days

This 500 km circuit links the Sunshine Coast to Rainbow Beach and Tin Can Bay via inland roads, with an optional beach driving section along the Cooloola Coast. Visit Carlo Sand Blow at sunset and explore the coloured sands. A well-equipped motorhome or campervan with 4WD access is best for the beach stretch.

Southeast Queensland Grand Loop

600 km 8–15 days

From the Sunshine Coast, head south through Brisbane to the Gold Coast hinterland, loop through Tamborine Mountain and Lamington National Park, then return north via Ipswich and the D'Aguilar Range. What you need to know about roads and motorways in Sunshine Coast

The Bruce Highway (M1) runs parallel to the Sunshine Coast and connects Brisbane to the region in about an hour. It is a toll-free motorway for most of its length through this section, though you should check for any variable speed zones near interchanges. Speed limits for motorhomes under 4.5 tonnes generally match standard car limits at 110 km/h on the motorway, while vehicles over 4.5 tonnes are restricted to 100 km/h. The Sunshine Motorway branches off the M1 and provides direct access to coastal towns like Maroochydore and Noosa. Rest areas with parking suitable for larger vehicles are well signposted along the Bruce Highway.

Great experience renting the Jimny. The owners were brilliant to deal with from start to finish, and the Jeep was in excellent condition. It was perfect for exploring the Algarve. Would definitely recommend and would happily rent from them again!

Clean, well-maintained vehicle that gave us so many great memories! We traveled to many places and drove around 900 km ourselves, and it handled everything flawlessly. Thanks to its size, parking was super easy, we could fit anywhere, and we were able to sleep in spots where a different kind of campervan wouldn't have worked. It is fully equipped with everything provided, even extra games for beach days! The bed and bedding were clean, and it has a really comfortable mattress. The owners were super nice and sweet. Everything went smoothly during both pickup and drop-off, and they were always there to help whenever we needed it, even when we got a bit lost! 😅 Plus point that they were super cool and easy to talk to. P.S. The AC works like a charm!
