Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Switzerland

Switzerland — a country worth exploring

Switzerland packs 1,500 lakes and 48 peaks above 4,000 metres into a country roughly 350 km wide, making it one of Europe's most geographically dense destinations for a road trip. From the shores of Lake Geneva in the west to the Engadin Valley in the east, the landscape shifts between French-speaking vineyards, German-speaking alpine meadows, and Italian-speaking palm-lined lakefronts. The distance from Zurich to Zermatt is around 230 km, yet the drive crosses three distinct climate zones and passes through the Lötschberg region. Iconic landmarks such as the Matterhorn, the Chapel Bridge in Lucerne, the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen, and the Aletsch Glacier — the largest ice stream in the Alps — are all reachable by well-maintained roads designed with touring vehicles in mind. From Bern to Interlaken the journey is just 56 km, opening up the Jungfrau region for day trips without needing to relocate your base. Mountain passes like the Gotthard, Furka, and Susten are generally open from June to October and offer spectacular driving with designated rest areas and wide turning bays. Switzerland's compact size means you can combine lakes, cities, and high-altitude scenery in a single week. With Yescapa, you hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners spread across the country, giving you flexible pick-up points and a personal introduction to each vehicle before you set off.

Best time to visit

The best months to hire a campervan in Switzerland are June to September, when mountain passes are open and campsites operate at full capacity. July hosts the Montreux Jazz Festival on the shores of Lake Geneva, and August brings the Swiss National Day celebrations on 1 August with fireworks across the country. Spring and autumn are quieter, with lower prices and golden larch forests in October drawing photographers to the Engadin. Through Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing often undercuts traditional hire companies, especially outside peak summer weeks. Book early for July and August to secure the widest choice of vehicles in Switzerland.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Switzerland

Switzerland requires a motorway vignette (CHF 40, valid one calendar year) for all vehicles using its national motorways, available at border crossings, post offices, and online. Speed limits for motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes are 120 km/h on motorways, 80 km/h on main roads, and 50 km/h in built-up areas. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are limited to 100 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h elsewhere. Several alpine tunnels, including the Gotthard Road Tunnel, can experience queues in summer — check real-time traffic before setting off. Rest areas with motorhome service points are well signposted along major routes such as the A1 and A2.

Kevin was so helpful helping John and I embark on our first campervan journey with our dogs travelling the length of France in his lovely converted Boxer van we have all come to love as ''Olive''. The first trip of many our experience was overwhelmingly good. So many amazing places to stop at and amazing views from Blue Lakes , Vast Gorges and amazing views from High Mountain Passes, Olive got us there ! Then when we were all parked up she offered us such a lovely comfy place to spend the night. With mosquito nets and an ambient cooling system in the cab, we took some fans to cope with the ' above 40 degree at times, temperatures but the dogs and us were absolutely fine.. Olive's solar powered appliances really do work all day and through the night. Kevin was an amazing host - even though we 'lost ' his fuel tank cap! Don't ask us how! Id thoroughly recommend Olive to anyone . She is a lovely van and Kevin a great host.

Miguel was the perfect person to rent a camper van from. The van had everything you could wish for. He was kind, extremely helpful and the test drive I requested really assisted me. . All the paperwork and communication was highly efficient and very fair. No issues at all. As a single female in my 60s I could not recommend a better person.

My partner and I have been on van trips before, but only borrowing friend's vans in the UK. This was our first time renting a van abroad, first time using Yescapa and first time exploring the Picos de Europa. Overall it was a super smooth experience and enabled us to have one of the best holidays ever - so we would fully recommend! Firstly, the booking experience. We were visiting during the eclipse and so we were wary that everything was getting booked up. We stumbled upon Yescapa and this van, then the booking experience was pretty simple so it kind of felt too good to be true. Picking up the van was a doddle, with all the instructions sent clearly over WhatsApp. This meant we felt comfortable hitting the ground running. Secondly, the van was absolutely perfect for our holiday. The shower out the back was perfect for cooling down and cleaning off after runs. The camp stove worked great for making porridge in the morning, and we were grateful for the included chairs - especially when it came to watching the eclipse. We found that the fridge tended to heat the cabin when it was running which meant it worked quite well for helping control the temperature i.e. we'd leave the fridge running if there was a cold night due. Finally, thank you to Safira the host for letting us use the van for our wonderful trip. She was very quick to respond to any questions, and super lovely in helping us out during pick-up and drop-off.

We had a lovely few days in France in the motorhome. We picked up about 30 minutes from Calais which was very convenient for the ferry. The van had everything we needed and we had a great time visiting the Normandy beaches and D day sites.

We had the best experience with this campervan and were so sad when it was time to hand it back! We had it for 3 nights during peak summer at a really reasonable price, and it was absolutely perfect for our little adventure. The host was fantastic and always replied incredibly quickly whenever we had a question. The van itself had everything we could possibly need and more. You can really tell that the owner has thought about all the little details — from salt and pepper, coffee and tea, to plenty of kitchenware and even a coffee machine! The bed was super comfortable and really easy to assemble, and the fan worked brilliantly, which was definitely appreciated during the summer heat. We honestly loved every minute of van life and were genuinely sad to leave. Thank you for helping make our trip so special — we would definitely recommend this campervan to anyone looking for an amazing adventure!
