Espace Mittelland stretches across the heart of Switzerland, connecting the Jura mountains in the north to the foothills of the Bernese Alps in the south, and its capital city Bern holds UNESCO World Heritage status for its remarkably preserved medieval old town. The region covers roughly 5,000 square kilometres and includes some of the country's most varied landscapes — from the rolling farmland of the Emmental valley to the shores of Lake Thun and Lake Biel. Bern to Interlaken is just 56 km, making it easy to shift from city sightseeing to lakeside relaxation in under an hour. Heading west, the 50 km drive from Bern to the bilingual city of Biel/Bienne takes you through gentle countryside dotted with traditional Swiss farmsteads. Key attractions include the Zytglogge clock tower in Bern, the open-air museum at Ballenberg near Brienz, and the dramatic St. Beatus Caves along Lake Thun. The Emmental valley, famous worldwide for its cheese, offers quiet roads winding past wooden chalets and covered bridges — ideal terrain for a campervan at your own pace. Wider motorhome routes connect easily through the region's well-maintained road network, with plenty of designated overnight stops along the way. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners based across Espace Mittelland, choosing from a range of campervans and motorhomes that suit your travel style and group size perfectly.
Espace Mittelland is a rewarding destination from spring through to autumn. May and June bring wildflower meadows and comfortable temperatures, perfect for exploring the Emmental valley by campervan. Summer is peak season, with events like the Gurtenfestival in Bern each July drawing music fans from across Europe. Autumn offers golden foliage around Lake Thun and Lake Biel, plus quieter roads. Booking through Yescapa during shoulder months often means better availability and more competitive hire prices from local owners. For winter travellers, Espace Mittelland's lower-altitude routes remain accessible, and Christmas markets in Bern add seasonal charm.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

Wind through 90 km of Espace Mittelland's Emmental valley over 3–6 days. Visit the Emmental Show Dairy in Affoltern and cross the historic Holzbrücke covered bridge near Burgdorf. Narrow lanes suit smaller campervans, and farm shops along the route sell fresh local produce.
Covering 280 km over 5–8 days, this route runs from the Chasseral peak in the Jura down to Thun at the gateway to the Bernese Alps. Pass through Biel/Bienne and Bern, with overnight stops near Lake Thun. Suitable for both motorhomes and campervans with well-serviced rest areas.
A 350 km, 6–9 day circuit centred on Bern, looping through Solothurn's baroque old town and the Gantrisch Nature Park. Explore Espace Mittelland's mix of urban culture and forested highlands. Motorhome-friendly campsites are plentiful, and the route stays on well-maintained roads throughout.

Espace Mittelland offers a fine spread of campsites, from lakeside pitches on Lake Thun and Lake Biel to quieter spots in the Emmental countryside. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, fresh water, waste disposal, and modern shower blocks suitable for both campervans and motorhomes. Several larger sites near Bern and Interlaken also feature on-site shops, playgrounds, and Wi-Fi, making them comfortable bases for longer stays in the region.
Switzerland requires a motorway vignette (CHF 40 per year) for all vehicles using its national motorways, including motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes must instead register for the LSVA heavy vehicle charge. The speed limit on Swiss motorways is 120 km/h for cars, but motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are restricted to 100 km/h. Within Espace Mittelland, the A1 and A6 motorways connect Bern, Biel/Bienne, and Thun efficiently. Rest areas with facilities for larger vehicles are well spaced along these routes. Keep in mind that some mountain passes near the region's southern edge may have seasonal restrictions or width limits for bigger campervans.
Very helpful owner and great vehicle! Had a great time in the Mundaka.
It was a pleasure dealimg with Alain. The Motorhome was in good condition and Alain was very helpful at pick up and drop off ensuring we knew how everything worked.
We had a great time in the motorhome. Jean Pierre was very friendly and professional. We were shown how everything works before setting off. We would definitely recommend hiring this vehicle. Jean Pierre only speaks French but with the aid of a translator app and his son it worked out absolutely fine. Thanks again Jean-Pierre.
Frederic was excellent. Easy to contact and helpful at all times. The whole experience was a joy.
Fantastic, we were welcomed and everything was fantastic.
We hired this camper Asier for our family holiday through Spain and France, what a great van it is with everything you need. Asier is very friendly and helpful even though there was a language barrier. We would definitely use again if we needed to.
