Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Eastern Switzerland

Eastern Switzerland — a region worth exploring

Eastern Switzerland stretches from the shores of Lake Constance in the north to the towering Säntis peak at 2,502 metres, offering a landscape that shifts from rolling farmland to dramatic alpine terrain within a single day's drive. The region spans roughly 150 km from Schaffhausen in the west to the Austrian border near Feldkirch, and around 100 km from the German border south to the Graubünden highlands. You can explore the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Entlebuch, wander the car-free lanes of St. Gallen's Abbey District — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — or take in the Rhine Falls near Neuhausen, Europe's largest plain waterfall by volume. The Appenzell region rewards with its tradition-rich villages and the Ebenalp cliff path, while Walensee and the Churfirsten ridge deliver alpine scenery that feels far removed from city life. Roads here are well maintained but often wind through narrow valleys and over passes such as the Schwägalp, so a compact campervan handles the tighter stretches with ease, while a motorhome is ideal for the broader lakeside routes around Rorschach and Romanshorn. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners across Eastern Switzerland, giving you flexible pick-up points and a wide choice of vehicles suited to the region's mix of mountain and lakeside touring.

Best time to visit

Eastern Switzerland is at its liveliest from May to October, when alpine passes are clear and lakeside campsites open their full facilities. June's Olma Bratwurst Festival in St. Gallen and the traditional Alpaufzug cattle processions in Appenzell each September give you a genuine taste of local culture. Summer brings the longest days for hiking and lake swimming, while early autumn rewards with golden larch forests and quieter pitches. With Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing means you can often find better rates outside peak July and August, so consider a campervan trip in late May or September for excellent weather and more availability.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Eastern Switzerland

Switzerland requires a motorway vignette (CHF 40, valid one calendar year) for all vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes on national motorways. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes pay distance-based tolls via an on-board device. Speed limits on Swiss motorways are 120 km/h for cars, but vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are restricted to 100 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on main roads. Eastern Switzerland's A1 and A13 motorways connect Lake Constance to the Rhine Valley with well-signed rest areas and service stations. Mountain routes such as the Schwägalp pass have gradient warnings and occasional width restrictions, so check your vehicle dimensions before setting off.

We had a fantastic experience hiring this campervan! It was very clean, well maintained and exactly as pictured. Alberto, the owner, was incredibly friendly and helpful, and was always happy to answer any questions we had. The campervan was perfect for the three people travelling in our party and had everything we needed for a comfortable trip. The heating, hot water and electricity all worked perfectly, and having a cooker and fridge meant we could easily prepare meals and store food. We would highly recommend this campervan to anyone looking for a trip away, and wouldn’t hesitate to hire it again. Thank you Alberto!

Thank you, Jesús María, for one of our best travel experiences! Great communication before our arrival and warm welcome in Málaga were the perfect start to the trip. The van was fully equipped, and we had an amazing time exploring beautiful Andalusia. It was hard to say goodbye to our little home on wheels, but hopefully we’ll get the chance to take it on another adventure someday! Highly recommended! 🚐⭐️

We had a great trip and a good overall experience with Marco’s campervan. Communication with the owner was very swiftly, both before and during the rental. Campervan also met our standards and was in line with description. We were on the road for 9 days. It was our first experience driving and being on the road with a campervan and we did not experience any issues at all. The van itself was in good condition, and Marco was very available for any questions. Would definitely recommend!
