The campervan is the ultimate all-rounder. Effortlessly practical and built for freedom, it’s just as at home navigating tight city streets as it is exploring the heart of the countryside.
Central Switzerland stretches across 4,485 square kilometres around Lake Lucerne, where six cantons — Lucerne, Uri, Schwyz, Obwalden, Nidwalden and Zug — converge at the geographic heart of the country. The Rütli Meadow on the western shore of Lake Uri is recognised as the birthplace of the Swiss Confederation, founded in 1291. From the medieval Chapel Bridge in Lucerne to the revolving cable car up Mount Titlis near Engelberg, the region packs remarkable variety into a compact area. The drive from Lucerne to Andermatt covers roughly 65 km through the Reuss Valley, while the route from Brunnen to the Gotthard Pass spans about 50 km of winding alpine road. Towering peaks such as Pilatus (2,128 m) and Stanserhorn frame the lakeshores, and narrow mountain passes like the Susten and Klausen demand careful navigation — making a well-sized campervan ideal for exploring at your own pace. Valley floors and lakeside plateaux offer generous space for overnight stops, while higher routes reward you with panoramic views at every turn. Whether you fancy a cruise on Lake Lucerne, a ride on the steepest cogwheel railway in the world up Pilatus, or a hike through the Muotathal karst landscape, Central Switzerland keeps you moving. With Yescapa, you can hire a motorhome or campervan directly from local owners across the region, giving you the flexibility to start your trip from Lucerne, Zug or smaller towns and tailor your route to suit your schedule.
Central Switzerland is at its most inviting from May to October, when alpine passes are open and lakeside campsites welcome campervans and motorhomes alike. The Lucerne Festival, running from mid-August into September, draws music lovers from around the world and makes a brilliant cultural stop on any road trip. Autumn brings golden larch forests and quieter roads, ideal for unhurried touring. Winter travel is possible in lower valleys, though high passes close seasonally. Booking through Yescapa during spring or autumn often means better availability and more competitive peer-to-peer pricing across Central Switzerland.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 120 km loop follows the shores of Lake Lucerne through Weggis, Brunnen and Stans. Allow 3–6 days to enjoy boat trips, the Rigi railway and waterfront campsites perfectly suited to campervans exploring Central Switzerland.
Covering 80 km over 3–5 days, this short Central Switzerland route links Kriens and Engelberg via Stans. Ride the Pilatus cogwheel railway, then take the revolving cable car up Mount Titlis — ideal for a compact motorhome adventure.
A 250 km route over 5–8 days crossing the Susten and Klausen passes between Andermatt and Altdorf. Expect dramatic switchbacks and well-placed rest areas across Central Switzerland — best enjoyed in a campervan for easier handling on narrow bends.
Trace 300 km through the three founding cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Obwalden over 5–8 days. Visit the Rütli Meadow, Schwyz's federal charter museum and Sarnen, with lakeside pitches dotted across Central Switzerland for overnight stops.
This 180 km, 4–6 day route connects Lake Zug, Lake Sarnen and Lake Lucerne through rolling green valleys. Central Switzerland's quieter cantonal roads suit both campervans and motorhomes, with farm shops and scenic pull-ins along the way.
At 500 km over 8–13 days, this grand loop links Lucerne, Engelberg, Andermatt and Zug with detours over the Gotthard and Furka passes. Central Switzerland's full diversity unfolds — from lakeshores to high alpine terrain — with campsites at every stage.

Central Switzerland offers a fine spread of campsites, from lakeside pitches with mountain views to sheltered valley sites near alpine villages. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, fresh water, waste disposal and modern shower blocks suitable for both campervans and motorhomes. Whether you prefer waking up beside Lake Lucerne or at the foot of a glacier-capped peak near Engelberg, you will find well-maintained facilities across the region.
Switzerland requires a motorway vignette (currently CHF 40 per year) for all vehicles using national motorways, including motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes. Heavier vehicles pay a distance-based heavy vehicle charge instead. Speed limits on motorways are 120 km/h for cars, but motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are restricted to 100 km/h. In Central Switzerland, the A2 and A4 motorways connect Lucerne, Zug and the Gotthard corridor, while many scenic routes follow single-carriageway cantonal roads with lower limits of 80 km/h. Mountain passes such as the Susten and Klausen may have height or width restrictions, so check signage before setting off.

Everything went great!!! The van is amazingly equipped, Sérgio is always available and kind, great experience!!
Very enjoyable experience, the van was very comfortable, well equipped..dealing with Yescapa was seamless and the van owners very friendly and helpful, they went out of their way for us.
This was an excellent campervan for our party of 4 adults (and can easily sleep 6). Everything we used in the van was great and worked well. The large fridge/freezer and awning was helpful. Toilet and shower worked well. João was great throughout the whole process. He was really quick and helpful in all his communications before the trip, and during check-in he was really thorough with explaining all of the van's systems (even though we didn't speak Portuguese). We had a minor accident, and João was very reasonable and fair about the repairs. All together a very good experience, thank you!
We had an absolutely fabulous stay in this van, Bruno met us at the ferry port and the process was very easy and smooth! The van was perfect and had everything we needed, Bruno went above and beyond and provided bedding towels etc it was fab!
