Ticino is the only Swiss canton where Italian is the sole official language, giving it a cultural flavour quite unlike anywhere else in Switzerland. Stretching from the alpine peaks of the Gotthard massif down to the sun-drenched shores of Lake Lugano and Lake Maggiore, the canton packs an extraordinary range of landscapes into a compact area — Bellinzona to Lugano is just 30 km, yet the scenery shifts from medieval hilltop fortifications to palm-lined lakeside promenades. The three Castles of Bellinzona, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stand guard over the entrance to the alpine valleys, while the Verzasca Dam near Locarno (famous for its 220-metre bungee jump) draws thrill-seekers from across Europe. Deeper into the valleys, the Centovalli railway line winds through chestnut forests and over dramatic viaducts on its way to the Italian border, and the Cardada viewpoint above Locarno offers panoramic views from 1,340 metres. For those exploring by road, the drive from Airolo at the southern mouth of the Gotthard Tunnel to Ascona on Lake Maggiore covers roughly 65 km of sweeping descents and valley-floor cruising — ideal in a campervan or motorhome. Compact mountain roads and lakeside aires make Ticino particularly rewarding for campervan travel, and with Yescapa you can hire directly from local owners across the canton, choosing from a wide selection of vehicles suited to both alpine passes and lakeside touring.
Ticino enjoys the mildest climate in Switzerland, making it a year-round destination for campervan travel. May to October is the main touring season, when lakeside campsites are fully open and mountain passes are clear. The Locarno Film Festival in August transforms the Piazza Grande into the world's largest open-air cinema, and the Festa delle Camelie in late March celebrates Ticino's famous camellia gardens. Book early for July and August — these are the most popular months. Outside peak season, Yescapa's peer-to-peer model often means more competitive hire rates, and autumn brings warm days with fewer visitors along the lakes.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travellers.
This 120 km loop links Lake Lugano, Lake Maggiore and Lake Piano, winding through Gandria and Morcote along scenic lakeside roads. Allow 3–5 days to enjoy waterfront campsites and charming piazzas — ideal for a compact campervan trip through Ticino.
A 90 km route exploring two of Ticino's most photogenic valleys. Start in Locarno, drive to Lavertezzo's iconic double-arched bridge, then cross into the Maggia Valley to reach Cevio. Perfect for 3–6 days in a campervan, with riverside parking spots along the way.
Covering 200 km over 5–8 days, this Ticino route follows the old Gotthard Pass road from Airolo through the Leventina Valley to Bellinzona, then south to Lugano. Expect cobbled pass sections and sweeping valley views — a motorhome-friendly adventure with well-spaced rest areas.
This 350 km circuit takes 5–8 days and covers the full breadth of Ticino, from Ascona on Lake Maggiore to Mendrisio in the south, via Bellinzona and Lugano. Campsites are plentiful, and the route suits both campervans and motorhomes exploring the canton's diverse terrain.
A 160 km loop over 4–7 days, starting in Locarno and heading west through the Centovalli to Re on the Italian border before returning via Cannobio and the Lake Maggiore shoreline. Ticino's chestnut forests and lakeside villages make this a memorable motorhome route.
At 500 km over 7–11 days, this grand Ticino loop tackles the Nufenen, Gotthard and Lukmanier passes before descending to Lakes Lugano and Maggiore. Best suited to campervans under 7 metres; plan stops at Faido and Biasca for provisions and overnight parking.

Ticino's campsites cluster around the lakeshores and valley floors, offering pitches with views of water or mountains — often both. Most sites provide full hook-ups for campervans and motorhomes, along with modern shower blocks, laundry facilities and Wi-Fi. Whether you prefer a large, resort-style park on Lake Maggiore or a quieter spot tucked into the Maggia Valley, Ticino has options to suit every style of trip.
Switzerland requires a motorway vignette (CHF 40, valid for one calendar year) for all vehicles using national motorways, including motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes must instead pay the LSVA heavy vehicle charge. The A2 motorway is Ticino's main artery, running from the Gotthard Tunnel south to Chiasso at the Italian border. Speed limits for motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes are 120 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h outside built-up areas; heavier vehicles are limited to 100 km/h and 80 km/h respectively. Mountain roads in the upper valleys can be narrow, so check height and width restrictions before setting off.
Thank you, Jesús María, for one of our best travel experiences! Great communication before our arrival and warm welcome in Málaga were the perfect start to the trip. The van was fully equipped, and we had an amazing time exploring beautiful Andalusia. It was hard to say goodbye to our little home on wheels, but hopefully we’ll get the chance to take it on another adventure someday! Highly recommended! 🚐⭐️
Zeben was the most amazing and helpful host, always there if needed. The van has the perfect setup and it’s the best way to spend time on the island. Could not recommend more!
Great host,great camper
We had a great trip and a good overall experience with Marco’s campervan. Communication with the owner was very swiftly, both before and during the rental. Campervan also met our standards and was in line with description. We were on the road for 9 days. It was our first experience driving and being on the road with a campervan and we did not experience any issues at all. The van itself was in good condition, and Marco was very available for any questions. Would definitely recommend!
The hire from Franck was perfect for our holiday in the Alsace. It was modern and spacious and very practical. The hiring experience was very easy and Franck was a great host. He assisted us with all our questions and always responded promptly. We would not hesitate in recommending this motorhome for future trips.
Everything like on description and good communication with the owner. We had a lovely time! Thank you :))
