Nordwestschweiz sits at the crossroads of Switzerland, France, and Germany, making Basel — its cultural capital — the only Swiss city on the Rhine shared by three nations. The region stretches from the Rhine's banks south through the rolling hills of the Jura, covering roughly 1,700 square kilometres of diverse terrain. From Basel to Solothurn is around 70 km, while the drive from Rheinfelden to Balsthal covers approximately 65 km through the Jura foothills. You can explore the medieval old town of Solothurn, often called the finest Baroque city in Switzerland, or wander through Augusta Raurica near Augst — the largest Roman archaeological site north of the Alps. The Taubenloch Gorge near Biel offers dramatic limestone formations, and the Gempen plateau provides sweeping views across the Rhine valley. For those who love the outdoors, the Jura ridgeway trails and the Ergolz valley are ideal for leisurely walks between campervan stops. The road network is well-maintained and manageable even for larger motorhomes, with gentle gradients through most of the canton. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across Nordwestschweiz, giving you the flexibility to pick up your vehicle close to where your adventure begins. Whether you are planning a weekend along the Rhine or a longer loop through the Jura, Nordwestschweiz rewards those who take the scenic route.
May to September is the prime window for a campervan trip through Nordwestschweiz. Basel's Fasnacht, held in late February or early March, is Switzerland's largest carnival and worth planning around if you enjoy colourful street parades. In summer, the Basel Tattoo in July draws military bands from around the world to the city's barracks square. Campsites across Nordwestschweiz are fully open from April through October, with the best availability midweek. Booking through Yescapa during spring or autumn often means lower hire prices from local owners, and you will find quieter roads through the Jura hills. Pack layers — evenings in the foothills can be cool even in July.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

Nordwestschweiz offers a good spread of campsites along the Rhine and through the Jura foothills, catering to both campervans and motorhomes. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, fresh water, and waste disposal, with several also offering Wi-Fi and on-site shops. Switzerland requires a motorway vignette (CHF 40) for all vehicles using its national roads, including motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes. Heavier motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes must pay a distance-based heavy vehicle charge (LSVA). On Nordwestschweiz's motorways, the speed limit for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes is 80 km/h, while lighter campervans may travel at 120 km/h. The A2 and A3 motorways connect Basel to the rest of Switzerland, with well-signed rest areas offering parking suitable for larger vehicles. Be aware that some Jura mountain passes have height or width restrictions — always check signage before entering tunnels or narrow sections.

Everything went great!!! The van is amazingly equipped, Sérgio is always available and kind, great experience!!
Very enjoyable experience, the van was very comfortable, well equipped..dealing with Yescapa was seamless and the van owners very friendly and helpful, they went out of their way for us.
This was an excellent campervan for our party of 4 adults (and can easily sleep 6). Everything we used in the van was great and worked well. The large fridge/freezer and awning was helpful. Toilet and shower worked well. João was great throughout the whole process. He was really quick and helpful in all his communications before the trip, and during check-in he was really thorough with explaining all of the van's systems (even though we didn't speak Portuguese). We had a minor accident, and João was very reasonable and fair about the repairs. All together a very good experience, thank you!
We had an absolutely fabulous stay in this van, Bruno met us at the ferry port and the process was very easy and smooth! The van was perfect and had everything we needed, Bruno went above and beyond and provided bedding towels etc it was fab!
