Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Staffordshire

Staffordshire — a region worth exploring

Staffordshire's Cannock Chase, a 26-square-mile Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is one of England's smallest yet most ecologically diverse landscapes, home to herds of fallow deer and rare nightjar populations. The county stretches from the moorlands of the Peak District fringe in the north to the lowland heaths near Lichfield in the south, offering a rewarding mix of terrain for touring by campervan. From the market town of Leek to the cathedral city of Lichfield is roughly 40 miles, while Stoke-on-Trent to Tamworth covers about 35 miles, giving you a compact area to explore without long daily drives. The Trent Valley winds through the heart of Staffordshire, linking historic sites such as the National Memorial Arboretum near Alrewas, the Wedgwood Factory in Barlaston, and the dramatic ruins of Tutbury Castle. Alton Towers, set within 500 acres of grounds in the Churnet Valley, draws visitors year-round, and the Staffordshire Way long-distance footpath runs 92 miles from Mow Cop to Kinver Edge. Quiet lanes and well-maintained A-roads make the county well suited to both motorhome and campervan travel, with plenty of rural stopovers along the way. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across Staffordshire, choosing from a range of vehicles that suit your group size and travel style — a flexible, peer-to-peer approach that keeps costs fair and puts local knowledge at your fingertips.

Best time to visit

Staffordshire is enjoyable from spring right through to autumn. May and June bring wildflower displays across Cannock Chase, ideal for campervan touring in comfortable temperatures. The Lichfield Festival, held each July, fills the cathedral quarter with music and performance, while the Staffordshire County Show in late May celebrates rural heritage with livestock, food, and craft displays. Summer is the busiest period, so booking your motorhome on Yescapa ahead of time helps you secure the best choice and price from local owners. September and October reward you with quieter roads and rich autumn colour across the moorlands and valleys of Staffordshire.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Staffordshire

Staffordshire is well connected by the M6, which runs north–south through the county, and the M6 Toll — England's only motorway toll road — which bypasses congestion around Birmingham. The toll accepts cash, card, and pre-paid tags, with higher rates for larger vehicles including motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes. The national speed limit for motorhomes under 3.05 tonnes is 70 mph on motorways and 60 mph on dual carriageways, dropping to 60 mph and 50 mph respectively for heavier vehicles. A-roads such as the A53 and A52 cross the northern moorlands with some steep gradients, so take care with larger campervans. Rest areas and services are plentiful along the M6 corridor.
