Herefordshire's Black and White Village Trail links over a dozen timber-framed settlements dating back to the 14th century, forming one of England's most distinctive rural driving routes. This western county sits along the Welsh border, where the River Wye carves through rolling farmland, orchards and wooded valleys. From Hereford Cathedral — home to the medieval Mappa Mundi — to the dramatic ruins of Goodrich Castle overlooking the Wye Valley, the landscape rewards slow, unhurried exploration. The drive from Hereford to Hay-on-Wye, the world-famous town of books, covers roughly 34 km through gentle countryside, while the route south from Leominster to Ross-on-Wye stretches about 45 km past hop yards and cider orchards. Herefordshire is prime territory for campervan travel: quiet lanes wind between market towns such as Ledbury and Bromyard, and the terrain is largely flat to gently undulating, well suited to motorhome touring. You can stop at farm shops, walk sections of Offa's Dyke Path, or paddle along the River Wye between Hereford and Symonds Yat. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners across Herefordshire and the surrounding counties, choosing from a range of campervans and larger vehicles to match your group and your plans.
May to September is ideal for a campervan trip through Herefordshire, when cider orchards are in bloom or heavy with fruit and the Wye Valley is at its greenest. The Hay Festival runs each May in Hay-on-Wye, drawing book lovers from around the world, while the Big Apple celebration in October showcases the county's cider and perry heritage across local villages. Summer brings the longest days for walking and river activities, and campsites across Herefordshire are fully open with all facilities. Through Yescapa, you can often find better rates by hiring outside the school holidays, and booking a motorhome for spring or early autumn means quieter lanes and easier pitching.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
Follow Herefordshire's famous trail through Weobley, Pembridge and Eardisland — villages rich in medieval timber-framed architecture. At around 80 km, this loop from Leominster is perfect for a short campervan break, with farm campsites dotted along the route.
Drive from Hereford south through Herefordshire to Ross-on-Wye and on to Symonds Yat, covering roughly 110 km. Walk to Symonds Yat Rock for peregrine falcon views, then explore Goodrich Castle. Riverside campsites suit both campervans and motorhomes.
Loop through Herefordshire's orchards from Ledbury to Bromyard, Much Marcle and back via Hereford — around 200 km. Visit Westons Cider Mill and the Hop Pocket, sampling local perry and cider. Quiet lanes and gentle gradients make this a relaxed motorhome tour.
Trace the Welsh border from Kington through Hay-on-Wye and down to Monmouth, covering about 300 km through Herefordshire and its fringes. Walk sections of Offa's Dyke Path and browse Hay's bookshops. Campervan-friendly parking is available in most market towns.
Start in Herefordshire, head east to the Malvern Hills, north to Ludlow in Shropshire, then return via Leominster — roughly 400 km. Climb the Worcestershire Beacon, explore Ludlow Castle and sample local food markets. A mix of A-roads and lanes suits most vehicle sizes.
From Hereford, drive south through the Forest of Dean, across to the Cotswolds, then loop back via Worcester and the Malverns — around 550 km. Visit Gloucester Cathedral, Tewkesbury Abbey and Cheltenham. Plenty of well-equipped campsites welcome larger motorhomes along the way.

Herefordshire offers a good spread of campsites, from riverside pitches along the Wye to orchard sites in the heart of cider country. Many welcome both campervans and motorhomes, providing electric hook-ups, fresh water, waste disposal and shower blocks. Several are small, family-run sites with a relaxed feel, while others near Hereford and Ross-on-Wye have fuller facilities including laundry and on-site shops.
Herefordshire has no motorways; the A49 is the main north–south route linking Leominster, Hereford and Ross-on-Wye, while the A438 and A465 head west towards Wales. Roads are predominantly single carriageway, and many rural lanes are narrow with passing places, so a smaller campervan can be easier to manoeuvre than a large motorhome. There are no toll roads in the county. Speed limits on single carriageways apply at 60 mph for cars, but vehicles over 3.05 tonnes unladen are limited to 50 mph on these roads and 60 mph on dual carriageways. Fuel stations are spaced out in rural areas, so topping up in Hereford or Ross-on-Wye before heading into the countryside is sensible.
Communication with the owner was great, van was immaculate, heaps of choice, love the peer to peer concept. Easy to add an extra driver and ID checks were very thorough but straightforward. Changing dates wasn't so easy, the owner was great, but the process at the back end took some manual effort. Teething problems, not a big deal. Main area that needs improving (for me anyway) is the deposit. There was a single line in a table stating Deposit: cash or transfer, that I hadn't seen. The owner asked for the cash or a transfer when we were at the car, which he explained was normal process, but Yescapa could have explained beforehand. I transferred €2000 directly to the owner, which didn't feel comfortable. I had expected this would all be done via Yescapa. I ended up losing €45 in exchange rate variations + fees as well, the owner's bank had challenges which meant it to 5 days to get a lot of cash back. It was lucky we had that amount at hand. I would use Yescapa again. I hope they can tidy up and improve the processes though.
Very easy and open person… all went well , on time and with all the agremants.
Incredible time spent across the south of France with an incredible van! From beach, lakes, mountains and fields, it got me places I didn’t even pre conceive. Can’t speak more highly of my over all experience from van collection at train station to drop off. Drives smoother than my Suzuki jimny and can confirm very 6ft 4 friendly.
We had an amazing experience hiring Eli's campervan! It was perfect for our family of four – myself, my partner, and our two young daughters. The van was spotless, comfortable, and had everything we needed for our trip. It was easy to drive, well-equipped, and made exploring the malaga so much more enjoyable. The owners were friendly, helpful, and made the whole rental process smooth from start to finish. We made some unforgettable family memories and wouldn't hesitate to rent this campervan again. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a fun, comfortable, and hassle-free adventure in Spain. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
We had a great experience. All went smoothly and the camper van was perfect. Mike was very accommodating and communicative throughout and we would recommend highly.
Communication was easy, the vehicle is in good condition and looks like the shared photos. Has the amenities needed and comfy bedding. Having the solar charger is a plus given we didn't drive much, so there was no need for recharging with electricity.
