South East London sits on the south bank of the Thames, where the Royal Observatory in Greenwich has marked the Prime Meridian — longitude zero — since 1851. From the maritime heritage of the Old Royal Naval College to the wide green spaces of Blackheath and the ancient woodland of Oxleas Wood, this corner of the capital offers a rewarding mix of history, nature and local character. You can wander the galleries at the Horniman Museum and Gardens in Forest Hill, catch panoramic views from the hilltop at Crystal Palace Park, or explore the street food stalls at Deptford Market Yard. Canterbury lies roughly 90 km to the south-east, while Brighton is about 85 km due south, making both ideal additions to a longer trip. The Thames Path runs through the area, and many residential streets are surprisingly spacious for larger vehicles, though height barriers do appear in some car parks. Hiring a campervan or motorhome through Yescapa connects you with local owners across south-east London, so you can collect your vehicle close to where you want to start and set off without the hassle of a depot transfer. Whether you are planning a weekend escape to the Kent coast or a week-long tour of the South Downs, picking up from this part of London puts you within easy reach of motorways heading south and east.
Late spring through early autumn is ideal for exploring South East London by campervan. The Greenwich+Docklands International Festival lights up outdoor venues each June, while the Blackheath Fireworks display draws crowds every November. Summer months are the busiest for campervan hire, so booking your vehicle on Yescapa a few weeks ahead helps you secure the best choice and price from local owners. South East London's parks and riverside walks are enjoyable well into October, and quieter months often mean lower hire rates and easier parking at nearby campsites.
South East London is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 90 km south-east through the Kent countryside to reach Canterbury, home to Canterbury Cathedral and the medieval Westgate Towers. Stop at Faversham for its independent breweries and creek-side walks. Campsites around Canterbury offer spacious pitches with full hook-ups, and the city's park-and-ride keeps driving stress-free.
A 55 km drive east brings you to Whitstable, famous for its oyster beds and colourful beach huts along Tankerton Slopes. Browse the harbour market, then walk the coastal path to Herne Bay. Seafront parking areas accommodate campervans, and several nearby sites welcome overnight stays with sea views.
Travel 160 km south-west to the New Forest, where wild ponies roam open heathland. Visit Lyndhurst for the New Forest Heritage Centre and cycle the traffic-free routes around Brockenhurst. Motorhome-friendly campsites are plentiful, though booking ahead in summer is wise. The forest's quiet lanes suit larger vehicles well.
Drive 130 km south to Eastbourne and the chalk cliffs of the Seven Sisters. Walk from Birling Gap to Beachy Head for dramatic coastal scenery, then explore Eastbourne's Victorian seafront. Several campervan sites sit just inland, offering easy access to the South Downs Way.
Cover 240 km south-west to reach Dorset's Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, then continue to Weymouth for its sandy beach and harbour. Motorhome pitches along this stretch fill quickly in peak season, so plan your route and book early.
Head 280 km north-west into the Cotswolds, passing through honey-stone villages like Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow-on-the-Wold. Visit Blenheim Palace near Woodstock and sample local produce at Stroud Farmers' Market. Narrow lanes in some villages suit a campervan better than a larger motorhome.

South East London itself has limited campsite options, but the surrounding areas of Kent and Surrey offer a good range of sites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. You will find pitches with electric hook-ups, modern shower blocks, and waste disposal points within a short drive of the city. Many sites sit in peaceful countryside settings, giving you a green retreat after a day exploring South East London's attractions.
Parking a larger vehicle in South East London requires a bit of planning. Many borough car parks enforce height barriers of around 2 metres, so always check restrictions before entering. Overnight parking on public roads is generally permitted unless signage states otherwise, but some areas fall within Controlled Parking Zones that restrict stays during the day. Look for dedicated motorhome or coach bays where available, and consider park-and-ride options on the outskirts.
Patricia and Jorge were great, waiting at the airport when we arived and waiting 30mins at the return when we took a wrong turn. Helpful and friendly. Signed off the return easily and quickly. The van has character and plenty of Km but it was in perfect running order. I'd have no problem hiring from them again.
Frederick was lovely and the van was super. A lot of storage for a van plus a screen that separates the toilet from the shower which is much less of a mess. Big fridge and good cooking area and sink. The water pressure is very good so when you shower you get a really good pressure, having said that prepare to top up your water tank frequently. Lovely trip and a really well equipped and user friendly van layout would rent again!
Amazing experience! Jeremie has been so kind and helpful. The van is ideal, everything you need is there. Everything was smooth and easy. We will do the same again soon!
