Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Midlands

Midlands — a region worth exploring

The Midlands is home to England's longest canal network, with over 1,600 km of navigable waterways threading through its counties — a landscape best appreciated at the unhurried pace of a road trip. From the dramatic ridgelines of the Peak District National Park to the ancient woodland of Sherwood Forest, this central region offers remarkable variety within compact distances. Birmingham to Stratford-upon-Avon is just 37 miles, while Nottingham to Lincoln covers roughly 40 miles, making it easy to pack several destinations into a single journey. You can explore the Ironbridge Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that marks the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, or wander the medieval streets of Warwick and its imposing castle. The Malvern Hills provide sweeping views across Herefordshire and Worcestershire, and the market towns of the Cotswolds fringe — places like Chipping Campden and Broadway — reward a slower pace of travel. Roads across the Midlands are generally well-suited to larger vehicles, with wide A-roads connecting major towns and plenty of rural lanes leading to quieter spots. Whether you choose a compact campervan for a weekend break or a fully equipped motorhome for a longer tour, Yescapa connects you with local owners across the region, giving you a genuine choice of vehicles and pick-up points right where you need them. Hiring through a peer-to-peer platform means competitive prices and personal recommendations from people who know these roads well.

Best time to visit

May to September is the most rewarding window for a campervan trip through the Midlands, when longer daylight hours open up the Peak District's trails and Cotswold villages. The Stratford-upon-Avon Literary Festival in May and the Ludlow Food Festival each September both make excellent anchors for a route. Campsites across the region are fully open from Easter onwards, with the widest pitch availability in June and early July. Autumn brings golden colours to Sherwood Forest and quieter roads. Booking through Yescapa outside peak summer months often means lower hire prices from local owners, so shoulder-season trips offer great value.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Midlands

The Midlands is well connected by motorways, including the M1, M6, M5, and M42, all toll-free except the M6 Toll north of Birmingham, which charges around £7.90 for motorhomes. Speed limits for vehicles over 3.05 tonnes are 60 mph on motorways and 50 mph on single carriageway roads. Service stations appear regularly along major routes, and most offer dedicated parking bays for larger vehicles. Be aware that some older canal bridges and village lanes in rural Staffordshire and Shropshire can be narrow, so plan your route with vehicle dimensions in mind.

We had an amazing trip! Rafaela and Carina were so kind, and we couldn’t recommend their van enough 🤩🙏🏼 The van had everything we needed for a proper “van life” experience, and you can also stay at campsites whenever you want!

We hired a motorhome from Cemil for a week to travel around Switzerland. We also visited France, Germany and Liechtenstein. Before the trip Cemil was helpful and responded to questions promptly. On the day of pick up he met us at the train station and the handover was smooth and quick. At the end if the trip it was also a very smooth transition and Cemil kindly drove us back to the airport. The van was great - very easy to drive and everything worked perfectly. All tolls and insurance were covered. We were very happy with the motorhome and would highly recommend renting from Cemil.

We had a great experience hiring this motorhome. Everything went smoothly and we had absolutely zero issues throughout our trip. Fernando kept us informed about everything from the beginning and was very friendly and helpful. He was also very flexible with both the pickup and drop-off times, which made everything much easier. The location is perfect, especially if you're arriving via Prague Airport. We travelled all the way to Hungary and back to Poland, staying at several off-grid locations along the way. We had an amazing time at Lake Balaton in Hungary and also loved our stay at the Pod Opaleńcem campsite in Świeradów-Zdrój, Poland. We would definitely recommend this motorhome hire and would happily rent from Fernando again!
