Madeira's legendary levada network stretches over 2,500 km of irrigation channels carved into volcanic rock, forming one of Europe's most extraordinary walking and driving trail systems. This Portuguese archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean packs dramatic contrasts into a compact space — from the 1,862-metre peak of Pico Ruivo to the black sand beaches of Seixal, all within roughly 57 km from east to west. Funchal, the island's capital, sits on the southern coast and serves as your gateway to exploring laurel forests recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Head north-west and within 45 km you reach Porto Moniz, famous for its natural volcanic swimming pools. Along the way, the winding roads through São Vicente and Ribeira Brava reveal deep valleys and terraced hillsides that make every drive memorable. The island's compact size means you can explore at a relaxed pace, stopping to visit the traditional A-frame houses of Santana or the botanical gardens of Monte. Madeira's roads are well-maintained, though some mountain routes feature tight bends that suit smaller vehicles. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across Madeira, giving you the freedom to discover the island on your own schedule. Whether you prefer a compact campervan for navigating mountain passes or a larger motorhome for coastal comfort, peer-to-peer hire connects you with the right vehicle for your Madeira adventure.
Madeira enjoys a mild subtropical climate year-round, making it a fantastic destination in any season. Spring brings the famous Festa da Flor (Flower Festival) in May, when Funchal fills with floral floats and displays. December and January see the island's renowned New Year fireworks, one of the largest displays in the world. Summer is the most popular period for campervan travel, so booking your Yescapa hire early ensures the best choice of vehicles. Outside peak months, you benefit from quieter roads and more flexible peer-to-peer pricing, ideal for a relaxed motorhome tour of Madeira's mountain and coastal routes.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
Cover 200 km across Madeira over 7 to 11 days, from Funchal through the laurel forests of Fanal to the volcanic pools of Porto Moniz. This route suits a campervan and includes scenic mountain passes, levada trailheads, and coastal viewpoints at Câmara de Lobos.
Spanning 250 km over 10 to 15 days, this trip combines Madeira's mountains with Porto Santo's golden sand beach. Take the ferry from Funchal, explore Vila Baleira, then return to tour Santana's traditional houses. A motorhome gives you space for the longer journey.
An 80 km route over 3 to 5 days along Madeira's dramatic northern coastline. Drive from São Vicente to Porto Moniz, stopping at Seixal's black sand beach and the Grutas de São Vicente caves. Compact campervans handle the winding coastal roads with ease.
Circle the island over 120 km in 5 to 8 days, linking Funchal, Machico, Santana, and Ribeira Brava. You pass through tunnels, coastal cliffs, and terraced villages. Suitable for both campervans and motorhomes, with well-placed rest stops along the route.
A 150 km route over 5 to 8 days connecting Madeira's highest points with its coastline. Drive from Funchal up to Pico do Arieiro, cross the Paul da Serra plateau, and descend to Calheta's sunny beach. Plan fuel stops before the highland stretches.
This 60 km route over 3 to 6 days explores Madeira's interior valleys. Base yourself near Ribeiro Frio and walk the Balcões levada before driving through Queimadas forest park near Santana. Ideal for smaller campervans on narrow mountain lanes.

Madeira offers a small but well-positioned selection of campsites spread from the northern coast to the neighbouring island of Porto Santo. Facilities typically include electric hook-ups, showers, toilets, and waste disposal points suitable for both campervans and motorhomes. Coastal sites near Porto Moniz let you wake up to ocean views, while inland options around Santana place you close to Madeira's forest trails and levada walks. Booking ahead during summer is recommended, as pitches are limited.
Madeira has no traditional toll roads, so you can drive freely across the island without extra charges. The Via Rápida (VR1) is the main expressway connecting Funchal to Ribeira Brava, featuring tunnels and dual carriageways. Speed limits for motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes match standard car limits: 120 km/h on expressways and 50 km/h in towns. Heavier vehicles are restricted to 90 km/h on faster roads. Mountain routes, particularly the ER110 towards Paul da Serra, include narrow stretches and sharp bends — take your time and use passing places. Rest areas are limited on rural roads, so plan fuel and stops in advance.
Excellent van! Comfortable. spacious and rives like a dream. Also the owner, Albert, is a pleasure to deal with. Incredible communicator, very helpful and honest!
We travelled through Portugal for two weeks with our family of five. The camper has everything you need, and the air conditioning was a huge plus during the summer. Marcelino always responded quickly and was very helpful whenever we had a question. We had a fantastic trip and highly recommend this camper!
Great comms and super helpful. Van had everything we needed.
Kevin was so helpful helping John and I embark on our first campervan journey with our dogs travelling the length of France in his lovely converted Boxer van we have all come to love as ''Olive''. The first trip of many our experience was overwhelmingly good. So many amazing places to stop at and amazing views from Blue Lakes , Vast Gorges and amazing views from High Mountain Passes, Olive got us there ! Then when we were all parked up she offered us such a lovely comfy place to spend the night. With mosquito nets and an ambient cooling system in the cab, we took some fans to cope with the ' above 40 degree at times, temperatures but the dogs and us were absolutely fine.. Olive's solar powered appliances really do work all day and through the night. Kevin was an amazing host - even though we 'lost ' his fuel tank cap! Don't ask us how! Id thoroughly recommend Olive to anyone . She is a lovely van and Kevin a great host.
Amazing renters ) Happy vacation in Lanzerote and hopefully see you soon again )
Miguel was the perfect person to rent a camper van from. The van had everything you could wish for. He was kind, extremely helpful and the test drive I requested really assisted me. . All the paperwork and communication was highly efficient and very fair. No issues at all. As a single female in my 60s I could not recommend a better person.
