Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Alentejo

Alentejo — a region worth exploring

The Alentejo stretches across roughly a third of Portugal's landmass, yet holds less than seven per cent of its population, making it one of Western Europe's most sparsely settled regions. From the medieval walled city of Évora — a UNESCO World Heritage Site home to the Roman Temple of Diana — to the wild, cliff-backed beaches of the Rota Vicentina, the landscape shifts between cork-oak plains, golden wheat fields and a 150-kilometre Atlantic coastline. The drive from Évora south to Beja covers around 78 kilometres of gently rolling terrain, while heading west from Beja to the surf town of Vila Nova de Milfontes is roughly 130 kilometres through quiet back roads ideal for a leisurely campervan journey. Along the way you can explore the marble town of Estremoz, the hilltop fortress of Marvão perched at 862 metres, and the vast Alqueva reservoir — the largest artificial lake in Western Europe, perfect for stargazing under certified Dark Sky conditions. The Alentejo's flat to undulating roads suit both campervans and motorhomes, with wide lanes and minimal traffic outside the main towns. Through Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners based across the Alentejo and neighbouring regions, giving you a choice of vehicles that match your group size and travel style. It is a practical, peer-to-peer way to discover a region where every turn reveals open horizons and centuries of history.

Best time to visit

The Alentejo is a year-round destination, though spring and early autumn are especially rewarding. April and May bring wildflower carpets across the plains, coinciding with the Ovibeja agricultural fair in Beja each spring — a lively showcase of regional food, wine and rural traditions. September and October offer warm days ideal for exploring the Alentejo coast by campervan, with quieter campsites and comfortable driving conditions. Summer is the peak season, so booking your motorhome early on Yescapa lets you lock in competitive peer-to-peer rates. Winter stays mild, and the Alentejo's Dark Sky Alqueva reserve is at its best on long, clear nights between November and February.

The best road trips in Alentejo

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Inland Alentejo Crossing

350 km 5–8 days

This 350 km route links Évora to Mértola via Beja, crossing the sun-drenched plains of the interior Alentejo. Stop at the megalithic site of Almendres Cromlech and the whitewashed streets of Monsaraz. Quiet roads suit both campervans and motorhomes, with municipal campsites along the way.

The Alentejo Wine Route

200 km 4–7 days

Over 200 km and four to seven days, wind through the Alentejo wine country from Estremoz to Vidigueira. Visit the historic cellars of Borba and the Roman ruins at São Cucufate. Campervan-friendly roads pass through rolling vineyards with several estates offering tastings and overnight parking.

The Grand Alentejo Circuit

550 km 8–13 days

A comprehensive 550 km loop from Évora taking in the Alentejo coast, the Alqueva reservoir and the fortified towns of Elvas and Marvão. Allow eight to thirteen days to enjoy beaches near Porto Covo and stargazing at Dark Sky Alqueva. Motorhome service points are well spaced along the route.

The Vicentina Coast Route

120 km 3–5 days

Follow 120 km of the Alentejo coastline from Sines to Odeceixe over three to five days. Highlights include the dramatic cliffs at Cabo Sardão and the laid-back village of Zambujeira do Mar. Compact campervans work best on the narrower coastal lanes, and beachside campsites are plentiful.

The Alqueva Lake Circuit

90 km 3–6 days

A relaxed 90 km loop around Europe's largest artificial lake, starting from Reguengos de Monsaraz. Spend three to six days visiting the castle village of Monsaraz and the Alqueva Dark Sky Reserve. Flat terrain and wide roads make this ideal for larger motorhomes and first-time drivers.

The Upper Alentejo Castle Route

300 km 5–8 days

This 300 km route through the upper Alentejo connects Portalegre, Marvão and Castelo de Vide before looping south to Estremoz. Over five to eight days, explore medieval fortresses and natural parks. Roads are well maintained, and campervan-friendly aires dot the hilltop towns.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Alentejo

Portugal's motorways are tolled, and in the Alentejo the A2 (Lisbon–Algarve) and A6 (Lisbon–Évora–Spain) use electronic tolling. You can pay via an EASYToll device linked to your bank card, available at border points and service areas. Motorhomes over 3,500 kg are classed as Class 2 vehicles and pay higher toll rates. Speed limits for vehicles over 3,500 kg are 90 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on national roads. I had the most wonderful trip in Eve’s van. It has everything you need, a great sized fridge, a large comfy bed, cooking equipment, electrics to be off grid, a great shower & toilet. The van ran very smoothly and was a perfect size even driving through the towns was no problem at all. They were very accommodating, helping me with local tip and recommendations. I’d 100% recommend this van to anyone thinking of taking a road trip, you won’t regret it :)

Inigio and his lovely girlfriend looked after Dolly for one week here in the Algarve area. They brought her back clean and in really good shape. Before and during the rental period we had a very good dialogue. I can highly reccomend them to lend your car. :-)

Fantastic experience. Raul really went above and beyond to help us out and was always responsive with any queries we had. The van was in excellent condition, had everything we needed, and was ideal for our trip into the Pyrenees, plus heading south for the solar eclipse. Would highly recommend.
