Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Lisbon metropolitan area

Lisbon metropolitan area — a region worth exploring

The Área Metropolitana de Lisboa stretches across 18 municipalities on both banks of the Tagus estuary, making it one of Europe's few capital regions where river and ocean meet within a single metropolitan boundary. From the 16th-century Belém Tower on Lisbon's waterfront to the wild surf beaches of Ericeira — Europe's only World Surfing Reserve — the region packs remarkable variety into a compact area. The drive from Sintra's Pena Palace to the clifftop fortress at Sesimbra covers roughly 75 km, yet the landscape shifts from misty hilltop forests to sun-drenched limestone coastline. Head south across the Vasco da Gama Bridge, itself 12.3 km long, and you reach the golden sands of the Arrábida Natural Park in under an hour. The Serra da Arrábida's narrow, winding roads reward patient drivers with views over turquoise coves, while the broad A1 and A2 motorways make longer day trips straightforward for larger vehicles. Coastal towns like Cascais and Costa da Caparica offer dedicated motorhome service points, and campervan-friendly aires dot the region from Mafra in the north to Setúbal in the south. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners across the metropolitan area, choosing from a wide range of campervans and motorhomes suited to both city-edge stopovers and coastal adventures. It is an ideal base for exploring Portugal at your own pace.

Best time to visit

The Área Metropolitana de Lisboa enjoys a long touring season that runs comfortably from April through October. June is particularly rewarding — the Festas de Lisboa fill neighbourhoods with street parties, grilled sardines and live music throughout the month. September and October bring warm days, quieter campsites and excellent conditions for exploring the Arrábida coast or Sintra's forests by campervan. Book early for July and August, the most popular months, when coastal aires and campsites around Cascais and Costa da Caparica are in high demand. Through Yescapa, you can often find competitive hire prices outside peak weeks, as local owners set flexible rates across the Área Metropolitana de Lisboa.

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

80 km 3–5 days

This 80 km loop links Sintra's Pena Palace and Moorish Castle with the dramatic cliffs at Cabo da Roca, then follows the coast south to Cascais. Ideal for a campervan, with well-signed aires near Guincho beach. Allow 3–5 days to explore at a relaxed pace.

Arrábida Coastal Trail

60 km 3–6 days

A 60 km route winding through the Serra da Arrábida Natural Park from Setúbal to Sesimbra. Narrow hillside roads suit smaller campervans best. Stop at Portinho da Arrábida for sheltered swimming and fresh seafood in Sesimbra's harbour. Perfect for 3–6 unhurried days.

Tagus Riverbank Route

250 km 5–8 days

Follow the Tagus for 250 km from Lisbon's Belém district upstream through Santarém and Vila Franca de Xira, then loop back via the Lezíria wetlands. Flat terrain suits motorhomes of any size. Riverside campsites offer hook-ups and shaded pitches — allow 5–8 days for the full circuit.

Atlantic Coast to Arrábida

350 km 5–8 days

Covering 350 km, this route runs from Ericeira's surf beaches south through Sintra and Cascais, crosses the Tagus via the 25 de Abril Bridge, and continues to Arrábida. Campervan-friendly aires line the coast. Budget 5–8 days to enjoy the region's best beaches and seafood towns.

Grand Metropolitan Loop

500 km 7–11 days

A 500 km circuit connecting Mafra's royal palace, the fishing village of Ericeira, Lisbon's historic centre, Costa da Caparica's dunes and Setúbal's dolphin-watching estuary. Motorways and coastal roads alternate, suiting both motorhomes and campervans. Plan 7–11 days for a thorough exploration.

Lisboa & Alentejo Coast

600 km 10–15 days

This 600 km journey extends from Lisbon south through the Arrábida hills to the Alentejo coastline, reaching Sines and Porto Covo before looping back via Alcácer do Sal. Wild camping spots and quiet municipal sites suit self-sufficient campervans. Allow 10–15 days to savour the contrast between city and coast.
