Oeste e Vale do Tejo stretches from the Atlantic surf beaches of Peniche — home to the Supertubos break that hosts a round of the World Surf League each October — inland through fertile plains to the banks of the River Tagus. The region covers roughly 11,600 square kilometres and links two distinct landscapes: a rugged coastline dotted with fishing villages and a pastoral interior of vineyards, orchards and medieval towns. From the walled fortress of Óbidos, a 78 km drive south-east brings you to the Templar castle at Tomar, while the 60 km coast road between Peniche and Nazaré passes the towering cliffs of São Martinho do Porto and the sheltered lagoon at Foz do Arelho. Nature lovers can explore the Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park, where limestone caves and walking trails wind through Portugal's largest protected karst landscape. The Tagus estuary at Vila Franca de Xira draws birdwatchers year-round, and the Christ of the Tagus viewpoint near Almourol Castle offers panoramic river views. Travelling by campervan lets you hop between coastal and inland stops at your own pace, and a motorhome gives families extra space for longer stays. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners across Oeste e Vale do Tejo, choosing from compact campervans to fully equipped vehicles — a flexible, community-driven way to discover this diverse corner of Portugal.
May to October is ideal for a campervan trip through Oeste e Vale do Tejo, with warm days and reliable sunshine along the coast and inland plains. The Óbidos Chocolate Festival in March or April makes a tempting early-season reason to visit, while the Tomar Festa dos Tabuleiros — held every four years — fills the town with flower-topped processions. Summer brings lively beach culture around Peniche and São Martinho do Porto, and most campsites in the region open additional pitches from June onwards. Autumn rewards you with quieter roads, harvest-season wine tastings in the Oeste vineyards and pleasant temperatures for hiking. Through Yescapa, you can often find better hire rates outside peak months, thanks to flexible pricing set by individual owners across the region.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 180 km route links the UNESCO-listed monasteries of Alcobaça and Batalha with the Convent of Christ in Tomar. Allow 3–6 days to explore cloisters, taste local pastries in Alcobaça and wander Tomar's riverside streets. Well-suited to both campervans and motorhomes, with service areas along the way.
A scenic 120 km coastal drive over 3–5 days, passing the Berlengas Island viewpoint at Peniche, the calm bay of São Martinho do Porto and the famous big-wave beach at Nazaré. Campervan-friendly roads hug the shoreline, and several campsites sit within walking distance of the sand.
Cover 350 km in 5–8 days, looping from Santarém through the bull-breeding plains of Ribatejo to the vineyards around Torres Vedras, then north to Óbidos. A motorhome gives you space to stock up on regional wines. Flat terrain and wide roads make driving relaxed throughout.
This 280 km circuit over 5–8 days winds through the Oeste wine region, visiting Bombarral, Caldas da Rainha and Alenquer. Stop at family-run quintas for tastings and explore traditional markets. A campervan is perfect for navigating the smaller village roads between vineyards.
Spanning 500 km over 7–11 days, this route crosses the full breadth of Oeste e Vale do Tejo — from Peniche's coast through Rio Maior's salt flats to Vila Nova da Barquinha on the Tagus. Ideal in a motorhome, with well-spaced campsites and fuel stops along the N-road network.
An unhurried 550 km journey over 8–15 days following the Tagus from Constância to Abrantes, then climbing into the Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park before descending to the coast at Nazaré. Suits both campervans and motorhomes, with cave visits and riverside picnic spots throughout.

Oeste e Vale do Tejo offers a good spread of campsites, from beachfront parks along the Atlantic to quieter inland spots beside rivers and vineyards. Coastal sites near Peniche and São Martinho do Porto typically provide electric hook-ups, modern shower blocks and dedicated motorhome service points. Further inland, campsites around Rio Maior and Vila Nova da Barquinha cater well to campervans with level hardstanding pitches, fresh-water fill-up stations and waste disposal facilities. Booking ahead in summer is worthwhile at the most popular coastal parks.
Portugal's A8 motorway runs through Oeste e Vale do Tejo, connecting Lisbon to Leiria and serving as the main north–south corridor. Tolls apply on the A8 and the A15 (linking Óbidos to Santarém) and are collected electronically via the Via Verde system — you can purchase a temporary transponder at border points or main service stations. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed as Class 2 vehicles and pay higher toll rates. The national speed limit for vehicles above 3.5 tonnes on motorways is 100 km/h, reduced to 80 km/h on secondary roads. Regional N-roads such as the N242 along the coast are well surfaced and suit campervans comfortably, though some stretches through the Serra de Aire hills have tighter bends worth taking steadily.
Everything like on description and good communication with the owner. We had a lovely time! Thank you :))

Everything went great!!! The van is amazingly equipped, Sérgio is always available and kind, great experience!!
Very enjoyable experience, the van was very comfortable, well equipped..dealing with Yescapa was seamless and the van owners very friendly and helpful, they went out of their way for us.
This was an excellent campervan for our party of 4 adults (and can easily sleep 6). Everything we used in the van was great and worked well. The large fridge/freezer and awning was helpful. Toilet and shower worked well. João was great throughout the whole process. He was really quick and helpful in all his communications before the trip, and during check-in he was really thorough with explaining all of the van's systems (even though we didn't speak Portuguese). We had a minor accident, and João was very reasonable and fair about the repairs. All together a very good experience, thank you!
We had an absolutely fabulous stay in this van, Bruno met us at the ferry port and the process was very easy and smooth! The van was perfect and had everything we needed, Bruno went above and beyond and provided bedding towels etc it was fab!
