Centro is home to Portugal's highest mountain range, the Serra da Estrela, which rises to 1,993 metres and offers year-round appeal for outdoor enthusiasts. Stretching from the Atlantic coast to the Spanish border, this diverse region packs an extraordinary amount into a compact area. The medieval university city of Coimbra sits roughly 120 km north of Lisbon, while the coastal resort of Figueira da Foz lies just 40 km west of Coimbra, giving you easy access to both culture and coastline. You can wander the ornate Biblioteca Joanina in Coimbra, explore the Templar stronghold of the Convento de Cristo in Tomar, or follow the boardwalks through the Mata Nacional do Buçaco, a centuries-old forest filled with exotic tree species. Along the Silver Coast, fishing villages like Nazaré and Peniche serve up fresh seafood and world-class surf breaks. Inland, the granite villages of the Serra da Lousã offer quiet lanes ideal for a campervan, while the Mondego River valley provides flat, easy driving through vineyards and rice paddies. Centro rewards slow travel, and a motorhome gives you the freedom to linger wherever the mood takes you. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners across Centro, choosing from a range of campervans and larger vehicles to match your plans. Whether you want a compact van for narrow mountain roads or a fully equipped family motorhome, the peer-to-peer model means competitive prices and personal recommendations from people who know the region best.
Centro is wonderful from late spring through to autumn. May and June bring warm, settled weather and quieter roads — ideal for a campervan trip along the coast or into the Serra da Estrela. Summer is peak season, when festivals such as the Festas da Rainha Santa in Coimbra (early July) draw large crowds. September and October offer mild temperatures and harvest-season flavours, including the Vindimas wine festivals across the Dão and Bairrada wine regions. Booking through Yescapa outside peak months often means lower hire prices thanks to flexible owner pricing, and you will find campsites less busy across Centro.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travellers.
This 150 km route through Centro links Tomar's Convento de Cristo to the Monastery of Batalha and the castle at Ourém. Allow 3–6 days to explore at a relaxed pace, with well-signed roads suited to any campervan. Overnight spots are plentiful near each town.
Covering 350 km, this route runs from the lagoons of the Ria de Aveiro up into the Serra da Estrela mountains. Over 5–8 days you pass through Viseu and the Dão wine country. A motorhome with good clearance handles the mountain stretches comfortably.
A 400 km loop through Centro's lush interior, taking in the Mata Nacional do Buçaco, the thermal town of Luso, and the schist villages of the Serra da Lousã. Plan 6–8 days and enjoy riverside campsites along the Mondego. Great for a campervan escape.
Follow 180 km of Atlantic coastline from Peniche to Figueira da Foz over 3–5 days. Stop at Nazaré for its famous surf and São Martinho do Porto's sheltered bay. Coastal campsites in Centro welcome both campervans and motorhomes with full hook-ups.
This 550 km circuit connects Coimbra, Guarda, and Castelo Branco before looping back via Tomar. Allow 7–11 days to cover Centro's highlands and plains. Roads are well surfaced, and motorhome service points appear at regular intervals along the route.
A 600 km journey over 10–15 days tracing Centro's eastern border with Spain. Visit the fortified town of Almeida, the Côa Valley rock art site, and the historic city of Guarda. Quiet roads and spacious aires make this ideal for a leisurely motorhome tour.

Centro offers a fine spread of campsites, from beachfront parks along the Atlantic to mountain pitches near the Serra da Estrela. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, modern shower blocks, and dedicated motorhome service areas. Coastal parks tend to fill first in summer, so booking ahead is worthwhile. Inland, you will find quieter sites with generous pitches suited to larger campervans and motorhomes alike, often surrounded by pine forest or river scenery.
Portugal's motorway network in Centro is well maintained, with the A1 linking Lisbon to Coimbra and the A25 crossing east towards the Spanish border. Most motorways are tolled; electronic tolling applies on several routes, so you should purchase a prepaid toll card or hire a Via Verde device at the border or a post office. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are generally 90 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on main roads. Mountain routes through the Serra da Estrela can be narrow and steep, so check your vehicle height and weight before heading inland.
Great host,great camper
We had a great trip and a good overall experience with Marco’s campervan. Communication with the owner was very swiftly, both before and during the rental. Campervan also met our standards and was in line with description. We were on the road for 9 days. It was our first experience driving and being on the road with a campervan and we did not experience any issues at all. The van itself was in good condition, and Marco was very available for any questions. Would definitely recommend!
The hire from Franck was perfect for our holiday in the Alsace. It was modern and spacious and very practical. The hiring experience was very easy and Franck was a great host. He assisted us with all our questions and always responded promptly. We would not hesitate in recommending this motorhome for future trips.
