Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Algarve

Algarve — a region worth exploring

The Algarve stretches across 155 km of Portugal's southern coastline, where over 100 sea caves and grottoes — including the world-famous Benagil Cave — have been carved into golden limestone cliffs by centuries of Atlantic tides. From the dramatic rock formations at Ponta da Piedade near Lagos to the peaceful marshlands of the Ria Formosa Natural Park east of Faro, this region packs extraordinary variety into a compact area. The drive from Sagres, at the far southwestern tip, to Vila Real de Santo António on the Spanish border covers roughly 160 km along the EN125, making it easy to explore at your own pace. Inland, the Serra de Monchique rises to 902 metres, offering cooler air, cork oak forests and panoramic views back towards the coast. Towns like Tavira, Silves and Loulé each have their own character, from Moorish architecture to bustling weekly markets. The Algarve's roads are well-maintained and largely flat along the coast, which suits both campervans and larger motorhomes perfectly. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners based across the Algarve, giving you the flexibility to collect your vehicle in Faro, Lagos or Albufeira and set off on your own schedule. It is a region built for road trips — and the peer-to-peer model means you often find a wider choice of vehicles at more accessible prices.

Best time to visit

The Algarve enjoys one of Europe's longest warm seasons, making it ideal for a campervan trip from April right through to October. Spring brings wildflowers across the Serra de Monchique and comfortable temperatures for coastal walks, while the Algarve International Motorcycle Rally in Faro each July draws thousands of visitors. Autumn is particularly rewarding — the sea stays warm into November and campsites are quieter. Through Yescapa, you can often find better hire rates outside the peak summer months of July and August, when local owners offer competitive pricing. Book a few weeks ahead for spring or early autumn to secure the best choice of vehicles across the Algarve.

The best road trips in Algarve

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Ria Formosa Loop

90 km 3–5 days

This 90 km loop explores the Algarve's eastern wetlands. Start in Faro, cross to Ilha de Tavira by ferry, then follow the coast through Olhão's waterfront markets. Ideal for campervans, with several well-equipped campsites near the lagoon shores.

The West Coast Discovery

350 km 5–8 days

Head 350 km from Lagos up the Algarve's wild western edge into the Alentejo. Pass through Aljezur and the Vicentine Coast Natural Park, with surf beaches at Arrifana and Amado. Motorhomes and campervans both manage these roads well, though some beach access tracks are narrow.

The Grand Algarve Traverse

400 km 5–8 days

Cover 400 km from Sagres to Vila Real de Santo António, taking in the full breadth of the Algarve coastline. Stop at Ponta da Piedade, Albufeira's old town and the castle at Silves. Campsites are plentiful along this route, making it a relaxed week-long journey.

Algarve to Alentejo Connection

550 km 7–11 days

This 550 km route links the Algarve coast with the rolling plains of the Alentejo. Climb through Monchique, visit the spa town of Caldas de Monchique, then continue north to Beja and Mértola. A motorhome gives you space for the cooler highland evenings along the way.

The Complete Southern Portugal Circuit

600 km 10–15 days

At 600 km, this circuit covers the Algarve coast, the Vicentine Coast and a stretch of the Alentejo interior. From Faro, head west to Sagres, north to Odemira, then loop back via Loulé. Allow two weeks to enjoy the variety of landscapes and local food markets.

The Golden Coast

120 km 3–6 days

A compact 120 km route along the central Algarve between Portimão and Faro. Explore the Benagil Cave by boat, wander Carvoeiro's clifftop paths and stop at Vilamoura marina. Perfect for a short campervan break with easy parking and well-spaced campsites throughout.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Algarve

The Algarve is served by the A22 (Via do Infante), a toll motorway running east–west across the region. Tolls are electronic only — there are no booths — so you need to register your vehicle or hire a temporary transponder at post offices or online before using it. The speed limit on the A22 is 120 km/h for cars, but motorhomes over 3,500 kg must keep to 100 km/h. The toll-free EN125 runs a parallel route and is a practical alternative, though it passes through towns and is slower. Roads throughout the Algarve are generally well-surfaced, and most coastal and inland routes are suitable for larger vehicles.

Communication was easy, the vehicle is in good condition and looks like the shared photos. Has the amenities needed and comfy bedding. Having the solar charger is a plus given we didn't drive much, so there was no need for recharging with electricity.

We rented Jorge’s lovely caravan for four days as a mother and daughter trip to celebrate a 55th birthday. It was our first caravan experience, and we honestly loved it! Jorge offers several convenient extras for a small fee, including airport transfers, cleaning. Despite our late-night flight from London, he met us on arrival, gave us a thorough tour of the caravan, and even suggested we record it on our phones, which proved very helpful. A bottle of cold water waiting in the fridge was such a thoughtful touch. After arriving at 1 am in 34°C heat with no open shops nearby, it was a huge relief. We had a small issue with the fridge and also opening the water refill cap, but Jorge happily helped us over a video call. We never felt abandoned - he was always kind, responsive, and professional. The caravan is practical, comfortable, and well-equipped with everything we needed. Our deposit was also returned promptly. Thank you, Jorge, for making our first caravan holiday such a great experience and sorry about the hard to reach sauce spillage again!

This was our first experience hiring a van and it was very good. Patrick was super helpful and friendly. We experienced some problems with the battery but Patrick was very responsive and helpful trying to solve this. The van has everything you need, although a cradle for your phone would be useful if using for directions as there is no satnav. The bed was surprisingly spacious and very comfy- we slept very well considering the 40 degree heat wave! We would recommend this van to you. Thank you Patrick!
