Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Nouvelle-Aquitaine — a region worth exploring

Nouvelle-Aquitaine stretches across 84,000 square kilometres, making it the largest region in metropolitan France by area. From the towering Dune of Pilat near Arcachon — Europe's tallest sand dune at roughly 100 metres high — to the medieval streets of Sarlat-la-Canéda in the Dordogne, the region rewards slow, unhurried travel. The Atlantic coastline runs for over 700 kilometres, linking surf towns like Biarritz and Hossegor with tranquil oyster ports around the Bassin d'Arcachon. Inland, the Vézère Valley shelters the prehistoric cave paintings of Lascaux, while Bordeaux, roughly 230 km north of Bayonne, offers world-renowned vineyards you can explore at your own pace. Head east and the landscape shifts to the rolling green hills of the Limousin and the volcanic plateaux of the Millevaches Natural Regional Park. Driving from Poitiers in the north to Hendaye on the Spanish border covers around 470 km, giving you a sense of just how much ground there is to discover. The region's well-maintained roads and plentiful aires de service make it ideal for campervan and motorhome travel alike. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners spread right across Nouvelle-Aquitaine, so you can pick up a campervan close to your starting point and set off without delay.

Best time to visit

Nouvelle-Aquitaine enjoys a long touring season from April through to October. Spring is ideal for exploring the Dordogne's villages and vineyards before the summer rush, while the coast comes alive from June with warm Atlantic waters and events like the Fêtes de Bayonne in late July. Autumn brings the grape harvest across Bordeaux's appellations — a wonderful time to hire a campervan and follow the wine routes at a relaxed pace. Campsites and aires stay open well into October in most of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, and with Yescapa's peer-to-peer model you often find more competitive pricing outside the peak summer weeks. Booking a few weeks ahead for July and August is wise, as this is the most popular period.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Nouvelle-Aquitaine is served by several major toll motorways, including the A10 from Poitiers to Bordeaux and the A63 running south to the Spanish border. Tolls are payable by card or cash at péage barriers, and a télépéage tag speeds things up if you plan multiple journeys. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed in a higher toll category and must observe a speed limit of 110 km/h on motorways (rather than 130 km/h for cars). Dual carriageways and well-signed national roads offer toll-free alternatives, particularly along the coast. Rest areas with motorhome service points appear regularly on main routes, making long drives comfortable.

What our users say about our campervans and motorhomes in Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Patricia and Jorge were great, waiting at the airport when we arived and waiting 30mins at the return when we took a wrong turn. Helpful and friendly. Signed off the return easily and quickly. The van has character and plenty of Km but it was in perfect running order. I'd have no problem hiring from them again.

Frederick was lovely and the van was super. A lot of storage for a van plus a screen that separates the toilet from the shower which is much less of a mess. Big fridge and good cooking area and sink. The water pressure is very good so when you shower you get a really good pressure, having said that prepare to top up your water tank frequently. Lovely trip and a really well equipped and user friendly van layout would rent again!
