Why choose Bayonne for your road trip

Bayonne — a city worth exploring

Bayonne sits at the confluence of the Nive and Adour rivers, making it the only city in France where two rivers meet within a fortified old town designed by Vauban. The Cathédrale Sainte-Marie, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Camino de Santiago route, towers over the narrow streets of Grand Bayonne with its twin Gothic spires. Across the Nive, the colourful half-timbered houses of Petit Bayonne line the waterfront, home to the Musée Basque et de l'Histoire de Bayonne — the largest museum of Basque culture in the region. Chocolate lovers will enjoy the city's long tradition of cacao craftsmanship, celebrated at the Atelier du Chocolat, where Bayonne's status as France's chocolate capital comes to life. Biarritz and its famous Grande Plage lie just 8 km to the west, while the Spanish border town of Irún is only 30 km to the south, opening up cross-border adventures with ease. The flat terrain along the Adour estuary and well-maintained roads make driving a motorhome around the area straightforward, though the old town's lanes are best explored on foot. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners in the Basque Country, giving you the flexibility to discover Bayonne at your own pace. Whether you fancy surfing on the Atlantic coast or hiking the foothills of the Pyrenees, a campervan gives you the freedom to combine city culture with outdoor exploration from one convenient base.

Best time to visit

Bayonne is wonderful from May through to October, with warm weather ideal for exploring by campervan. The Fêtes de Bayonne, held over five days in late July, is one of France's largest festivals — book your Yescapa motorhome well ahead for this period, as it draws over a million visitors. Autumn brings the Journées du Chocolat in October, a quieter time to enjoy the city's culinary heritage. Hiring outside peak summer months often means better availability and more competitive pricing through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, where local owners set their own rates. Spring is particularly pleasant for road trips along the Basque coast.

Where to park your motorhome

Bayonne has several options for parking larger vehicles, though the narrow streets of Grand Bayonne and Petit Bayonne are best avoided in a motorhome. Dedicated motorhome areas offer services such as fresh water and waste disposal. Overnight parking in public car parks is generally not permitted unless specifically signed, so always check local signage. For longer stays, a nearby campsite with full facilities is the most practical choice.

  • Parking du Forum, 1km east — Large car park near the shopping centre on the north side of the city centre, with spaces suitable for larger vehicles during the day. No overnight stays permitted.
  • Bayonne Motorhome Aire, 2km northwest — Dedicated motorhome service area with fresh water, grey water disposal, and electricity. Open year-round and conveniently located for walking into the old town.
  • Parking de la Gare, 1km north — Situated next to Bayonne railway station, this car park offers daytime parking for campervans. Good access to public transport and a short walk to Petit Bayonne.

Absolutely loved staying in Alfreds campervan. The decor was beautiful. It had everything we needed, a perfect space for two people for time in nature travelling. It was so good having a fridge on the road. He answered any questions I had and the pick up/ drop off was great. Would definitely love to rent it again in the future when we come back to Spain. Thank you!

Communication with Guillaume the owner was excellent. Always available to answer questions and give advice about travel destinations. The campervan was a perfect size for our first experience of this type of holiday. We used sites for our 7 night travel experience which worked well with electric/topping up water etc. Overall a great experience and would use this owner again.

Everything went smooth during the whole pick up and return process. The van has seen some life but everything was clean and in great working condition + the price was very competitive when comparing to anything else available at the time. Very enjoyable trip with the van, highly recommended
