Bergerac sits on the banks of the Dordogne River, where over 12,000 hectares of AOC vineyards stretch across rolling hills right to the edge of town. The old quarter, known as the Vieux Port, is lined with half-timbered houses dating back to the 14th century, and a bronze statue of Cyrano de Bergerac stands proudly in Place Pélissière — a nod to the literary hero forever linked with the city's name. You can wander through the Cloître des Récollets, a 17th-century cloister that now houses the Maison des Vins, where local winemakers showcase Bergerac, Monbazillac and Pécharmant appellations. The Musée du Tabac, one of the only tobacco museums in Europe, traces the cultural history of the plant across five centuries. For a change of pace, the Château de Monbazillac rises just 8 km south, offering panoramic views over the valley. Périgueux, the Dordogne's capital, is only 48 km north, while the medieval village of Sarlat-la-Canéda lies 74 km east — both make excellent day trips by campervan. The roads around Bergerac are generally well-suited to larger vehicles, with wide D-roads winding through gentle countryside rather than tight mountain passes. With Yescapa, you hire your motorhome or campervan directly from local owners in the area, which means you can pick up close to the action and set off along the Dordogne Valley without delay.
Bergerac is wonderful from late spring through to autumn. The Fête des Vendanges in October celebrates the grape harvest with tastings, parades and open cellar doors across the vineyards. In July and August, the Tables de Cyrano transforms the old town into an open-air dining festival along the river. Summer is the busiest period, so booking your campervan on Yescapa a few weeks ahead helps you secure the best choice from local owners. Spring and early autumn bring quieter roads and mild conditions ideal for exploring Bergerac and the wider Dordogne at a relaxed pace, often at lower hire prices through peer-to-peer owners.
Bergerac is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 74 km east from Bergerac through the Dordogne Valley to Sarlat-la-Canéda, one of France's best-preserved medieval towns. Stop at the Jardins de Marqueyssac for cliffside walks and visit Domme for its panoramic river views. Allow 2–4 days and book a campsite pitch early in summer.
A short 48 km drive north from Bergerac brings you to Périgueux, home to the striking Cathédrale Saint-Front and the Vesunna Gallo-Roman Museum. Pause in Vergt to sample its famous strawberries. This 1–3 day campervan trip follows easy D-roads with plenty of roadside parking along the way.
Drive 95 km west from Bergerac to the UNESCO-listed village of Saint-Émilion. Tour the monolithic church carved from limestone and taste world-renowned wines at local châteaux. Allow 3–6 days to explore Castillon-la-Bataille en route. Motorhome parking is available near the village centre.
Travel 160 km south-east from Bergerac to Rocamadour, a pilgrimage village built into a sheer cliff face. Visit the Gouffre de Padirac caves and the hilltop village of Loubressac along the way. A 3–6 day trip suits this route well, with campervan-friendly aires dotted across the Lot Valley.
Set off 200 km south-west from Bergerac towards the Bassin d'Arcachon. Climb the Dune du Pilat, Europe's tallest sand dune, and sample oysters in Gujan-Mestras. Over 5–8 days you can also explore the pine forests of the Landes. Several large motorhome parks sit near the basin's shore.
A 280 km journey south from Bergerac leads to the Béarnaise Pyrénées. Hike the trails around Pic du Midi d'Ossau and soak in the thermal waters at Eaux-Bonnes. Allow 5–8 days for this campervan adventure. Mountain roads are well-maintained, though some cols have height barriers worth checking.

We hired the van for 8 nights and it was perfect. Went up to the mountains and down to the beach. It was very spacious and well kitted out. The owners are also lovely, accommodating and quick to reply to our message

Both Jesus and Susana were very communicative and made the rental process very easy. The van is basically new in very good condition and easy to handle. It was fun cooking in remote places having a beautiful view and having a large fridge really helped to keep all cool and fresh. We had a nice time with it and would certainly recommend it to others.
