Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Gironde

Gironde — a region worth exploring

Gironde is home to the longest estuary in Europe, stretching over 75 kilometres from the confluence of the Dordogne and Garonne rivers to the Atlantic Ocean. This vast département in south-west France blends world-renowned wine country with a coastline of sandy beaches and pine forests that runs for more than 120 kilometres. From Bordeaux, the regional capital, it is roughly 60 kilometres west to the towering Dune of Pilat — the tallest sand dune in Europe — and about 70 kilometres north-east to the medieval village of Saint-Émilion, a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its underground monolithic church. The Médoc peninsula offers a chain of prestigious châteaux, while the Arcachon Bay provides sheltered waters ideal for oyster tasting and cycling along flat coastal paths. Gironde's road network is well suited to larger vehicles, with wide départementale roads linking vineyards, river ports and ocean-side towns. Whether you fancy a campervan trip through the pine-shaded Landes de Gascogne or a motorhome tour of historic citadels like Blaye and its Vauban fortifications, the variety of landscapes keeps every day on the road fresh. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners based across Gironde, choosing from a range of campervans and motorhomes that match your group size and travel style.

Best time to visit

May to October is the prime window for a campervan trip through Gironde, with long daylight hours and warm temperatures ideal for coastal stops and vineyard visits. June brings the Fête le Vin in Bordeaux, a major riverside wine festival held every two years, while September's harvest season — known locally as les vendanges — lets you experience the Médoc châteaux at their liveliest. Campsites along the Atlantic coast and around Arcachon Bay are open from spring through to autumn, giving you plenty of flexibility. Booking through Yescapa outside July and August often means more competitive hire prices from local owners, plus quieter roads across Gironde for a more relaxed drive.

The best road trips in Gironde

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Médoc Vineyard Route

180 km 3–6 days

This 180 km loop through Gironde's Médoc peninsula links Margaux, Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe, passing world-famous wine châteaux. Allow 3–6 days to enjoy tastings and riverside picnics. Flat roads suit any campervan, and several estates offer overnight parking.

The Arcachon Bay Circuit

150 km 3–5 days

A 150 km route around Gironde's Arcachon Bay, calling at Gujan-Mestras for oyster ports and Cap Ferret for ocean views. Over 3–5 days you can climb the Dune of Pilat and cycle the bay's flat shoreline paths. Motorhome service areas are well signposted throughout.

The Atlantic Coast North to South

350 km 5–8 days

Follow 350 km of Gironde's Atlantic seaboard from Soulac-sur-Mer down to Biscarrosse, passing through Lacanau and Arcachon. Over 5–8 days, enjoy surf beaches, pine forests and lakeside campsites. Wide coastal roads are comfortable for larger motorhomes.

The Gironde Estuary and Its Citadels

280 km 5–8 days

This 280 km route traces the Gironde estuary over 5–8 days, linking the Vauban citadel at Blaye with Fort Médoc and the port town of Pauillac. Cross the estuary by ferry for a memorable campervan experience. Quiet riverside aires offer peaceful overnight stops.

The Saint-Émilion and Entre-deux-Mers Trail

200 km 4–7 days

A 200 km tour through Gironde's eastern wine country over 4–7 days, visiting the UNESCO-listed village of Saint-Émilion and the rolling hills of Entre-deux-Mers. Stop at Libourne's riverside market and explore Romanesque abbeys. Narrow lanes suit compact campervans best.

The Grand Tour of Gironde

This 500 km loop over 8–13 days covers the full sweep of Gironde — from Bordeaux to the Médoc, down the Atlantic coast, around Arcachon Bay, then inland through Saint-Émilion and back. A motorhome with good storage is ideal for this extended journey through diverse landscapes.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Gironde

Gironde's main motorway, the A10, connects Bordeaux northward to Paris, while the A63 heads south towards the Basque Country. Both are toll roads, payable by card or cash at péage barriers. If you are driving a motorhome over 3.5 tonnes, the speed limit on motorways is 110 km/h rather than the standard 130 km/h, and 80 km/h on single-carriageway roads. The A630 ring road around Bordeaux can be busy during rush hours, so plan to pass through outside peak times. Rest areas with dedicated motorhome service points appear regularly along the main routes, making refills and waste disposal straightforward.
