Why choose Fremantle for your road trip

Fremantle — a city worth exploring

Fremantle's Round House, built in 1831, stands as Western Australia's oldest public building and once served as a whaling station lock-up at the mouth of the Swan River. Today this port city at the edge of the Indian Ocean draws visitors with its well-preserved Victorian and Edwardian streetscapes, lively markets, and a creative arts scene rooted in maritime heritage. The Fremantle Prison, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers underground tunnel tours through passages carved by convict labourers in the 1850s. Along the waterfront, the Western Australian Maritime Museum showcases the story of the 1983 America's Cup challenge that put Fremantle on the global stage. For a taste of local life, the Fremantle Markets on South Terrace have been trading since 1897, brimming with fresh produce, street food, and handmade crafts. Rottnest Island sits just 19 km offshore, reachable by ferry from Fremantle Harbour, and is home to the famously friendly quokkas. Heading south, the Margaret River wine region is roughly 270 km away, making it an ideal multi-day road trip. The city's flat coastal roads and generous parking areas suit larger vehicles well, so exploring by motorhome or campervan feels straightforward. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from a local owner in the Fremantle area, giving you insider tips and a personal touch that traditional hire companies simply cannot match.

Best time to visit

Fremantle enjoys warm, dry summers and mild winters, making it a year-round destination. The Fremantle Festival in November fills the streets with live music, art installations, and community events. If you prefer cooler driving weather, May to September brings comfortable temperatures ideal for campervan touring. Summer months from December to February are the busiest, so booking your Yescapa hire early ensures the best choice of vehicles. Fremantle's coastal campsites are popular during school holidays, and midweek arrivals often mean quieter pitches and more flexibility for motorhome travellers.

The hire experience was excellent throughout. The owners were very friendly, accommodating and easy to deal with. We had such a good trip. The van is really well looked after and a pleasure to drive. The owners helped with anything we were unsure of and even gave us tips on where to eat and park up. We would definitely hire through these owners again.
