Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Alsace

Alsace — a region worth exploring

Alsace sits along France's eastern border with Germany, where the Rhine plain meets the forested slopes of the Vosges mountains across just 190 kilometres from Wissembourg in the north to the Swiss border near Basel. The region's Route des Vins d'Alsace stretches 170 kilometres through over 70 wine-producing villages, making it one of the oldest and most celebrated wine roads in France. From the half-timbered houses of Colmar's Petite Venise to the imposing red sandstone of Haut-Kœnigsbourg Castle perched 757 metres above the plain, Alsace rewards slow, curious travel. Strasbourg, the regional capital and seat of the European Parliament, lies roughly 75 kilometres north of Colmar, and both cities make excellent starting points for exploring the countryside. The Vosges ridgeline offers panoramic driving routes well suited to campervans, with gentle gradients and regular laybys, while the flatter vineyard roads east of the mountains are ideal for larger motorhomes. You can also follow the Rhine towpath cycle routes or stop at one of the many farmstead auberges for local Munster cheese and Kougelhopf cake. With Yescapa, you hire your campervan directly from local owners across Alsace, giving you the flexibility to collect a vehicle in Strasbourg, Mulhouse, or smaller towns and set off at your own pace. Whether you are drawn to Christmas markets in December or summer wine festivals, Alsace delivers a road trip rich in flavour, history, and scenery.

Best time to visit

Alsace is wonderful from late spring through to the festive season. May to September brings warm, dry weather ideal for campervan touring along the Route des Vins, with the Foire aux Vins d'Alsace in Colmar each July drawing wine lovers from across Europe. Autumn is equally rewarding — the grape harvest in October paints the hillsides gold and amber. From late November, Alsace hosts some of France's most famous Christmas markets, including Strasbourg's Christkindelsmärik, running since 1570. Book early for summer and December, as these are the busiest periods. Outside peak months, Yescapa's peer-to-peer model often means more competitive hire prices and a wider choice of available vehicles.

The best road trips in Alsace

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Southern Wine Route

120 km 3–5 days

This 120 km loop winds through Alsace's sun-drenched southern vineyards. Start in Colmar, pass through Eguisheim and Rouffach, and sample Grands Crus around Guebwiller. Compact campervan-friendly roads and plenty of winery parking make this a relaxed 3–5 day tasting tour.

The Sundgau Discovery

90 km 3–6 days

Covering 90 km across Alsace's rolling Sundgau countryside, this short route links Altkirch to Ferrette and its ruined hilltop castle. Quiet lanes suit any vehicle size, and you can stop at traditional carp-fishing ponds. Allow 3–6 days to enjoy the unhurried pace.

The Route des Crêtes

200 km 5–8 days

Follow this 200 km ridge road along the Vosges summits from Col du Bonhomme to Cernay. Panoramic views stretch across Alsace to the Black Forest. The route suits campervans well; motorhome drivers should check height clearances at a few tunnels. Plan 5–8 days with stops at Grand Ballon and Markstein.

Alsace North to South

350 km 5–8 days

A 350 km journey from Wissembourg to Basel tracing the full length of Alsace. Visit Strasbourg's cathedral quarter, Obernai's medieval centre, and Mulhouse's Cité de l'Automobile. Motorhomes and campervans both handle this well-surfaced route comfortably over 5–8 days.

Alsace and Vosges Grand Tour

500 km 7–11 days

This 500 km circuit combines Alsace's vineyard plains with Vosges mountain passes. Loop from Strasbourg through Sainte-Odile, the Munster valley, and the Ballon d'Alsace before returning via Sélestat. A campervan is ideal for the mountain sections. Allow 7–11 days.

Alsace and Haut-Rhin Explorer

600 km 10–15 days

At 600 km over 10–15 days, this extended tour covers Alsace's Haut-Rhin département in depth. Explore Colmar, Thann, Guebwiller, and the Écomusée d'Alsace near Ungersheim. Campsites with full hook-ups are plentiful, making it comfortable for larger motorhomes too.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Alsace

France's autoroutes in Alsace, notably the A35 running north–south from Strasbourg to Mulhouse, are toll-free in this region — an unusual bonus compared with most French motorways. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 110 km/h on autoroutes and 80 km/h on single-carriageway roads. The A36 connecting Mulhouse to Belfort does carry tolls, payable by card or cash at booths. Mountain roads through the Vosges, such as the Route des Crêtes, feature tighter bends and occasional height restrictions, so check your vehicle dimensions before setting off.

I had the most wonderful trip in Eve’s van. It has everything you need, a great sized fridge, a large comfy bed, cooking equipment, electrics to be off grid, a great shower & toilet. The van ran very smoothly and was a perfect size even driving through the towns was no problem at all. They were very accommodating, helping me with local tip and recommendations. I’d 100% recommend this van to anyone thinking of taking a road trip, you won’t regret it :)

Inigio and his lovely girlfriend looked after Dolly for one week here in the Algarve area. They brought her back clean and in really good shape. Before and during the rental period we had a very good dialogue. I can highly reccomend them to lend your car. :-)

Fantastic experience. Raul really went above and beyond to help us out and was always responsive with any queries we had. The van was in excellent condition, had everything we needed, and was ideal for our trip into the Pyrenees, plus heading south for the solar eclipse. Would highly recommend.
