Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

Bourgogne-Franche-Comté — a region worth exploring

Bourgogne-Franche-Comté is home to over 1,200 kilometres of navigable waterways — more than any other region in France — and its canal-side towpaths double as scenic routes for exploring by road. From the medieval hilltop town of Vézelay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to the Jura Mountains bordering Switzerland, the landscape shifts from rolling vineyards to dense forests and dramatic limestone plateaus. The Route des Grands Crus between Dijon and Santenay stretches roughly 60 kilometres through some of the world's most celebrated wine villages, while the drive from Besançon to the Cascades du Hérisson waterfalls covers around 95 kilometres of winding Jura countryside. You can wander the Hospices de Beaune, a 15th-century charitable hospital with its iconic polychrome roof tiles, or stand at the edge of the Cirque de Baume, a natural limestone amphitheatre carved over millennia. The Morvan Regional Natural Park offers quiet forests and lakes ideal for wild swimming, and the fortified town of Belfort guards the gap between the Vosges and Jura ranges. Narrow vineyard lanes and mountain passes make a campervan a practical choice for navigating the region's varied terrain, while a motorhome gives you room to settle in at lakeside aires and vineyard stopovers. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners across Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, choosing from a wide range of vehicles suited to both gentle canal-side touring and adventurous Jura crossings.

Best time to visit

May to October is the prime window for a campervan trip through Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. The Fête de la Vigne in Dijon each September celebrates the region's winemaking heritage with tastings and parades, while the Percée du Vin Jaune in late January or early February draws visitors to a different Jura village each year for the opening of prized vin jaune barrels. Summer brings long days perfect for exploring the Jura lakes and Morvan forests, and most campsites across the region are fully open from April through September. Shoulder months like May and October offer quieter roads and pleasant temperatures for touring the vineyards. With Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing means you can often find competitive rates outside peak summer, making a motorhome hire in spring or autumn excellent value.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

Bourgogne-Franche-Comté is crossed by several major toll motorways, including the A6 (Autoroute du Soleil) linking Dijon to Paris and the A36 running east towards Mulhouse. You pay tolls at péage booths by card or cash, and vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are charged at a higher rate. Speed limits for motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes match standard car limits — 130 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on single carriageways — while heavier vehicles are restricted to 110 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h elsewhere. Mountain sections in the Jura can include steep gradients and tight bends, so allow extra time on routes like the N5 towards the Swiss border. Rest areas with motorhome service points are well spaced along the A6 and A39.

Absolutely loved staying in Alfreds campervan. The decor was beautiful. It had everything we needed, a perfect space for two people for time in nature travelling. It was so good having a fridge on the road. He answered any questions I had and the pick up/ drop off was great. Would definitely love to rent it again in the future when we come back to Spain. Thank you!

Communication with Guillaume the owner was excellent. Always available to answer questions and give advice about travel destinations. The campervan was a perfect size for our first experience of this type of holiday. We used sites for our 7 night travel experience which worked well with electric/topping up water etc. Overall a great experience and would use this owner again.

Everything went smooth during the whole pick up and return process. The van has seen some life but everything was clean and in great working condition + the price was very competitive when comparing to anything else available at the time. Very enjoyable trip with the van, highly recommended
