Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Brittany

Brittany — a region worth exploring

Brittany's coastline stretches over 2,730 kilometres, making it the longest of any region in mainland France and a remarkable destination for touring by road. From the medieval walled city of Saint-Malo on the north coast to the standing stones of Carnac — more than 3,000 megaliths arranged in rows dating back to around 4500 BC — the region is packed with landmarks you can reach at your own pace. The drive from Rennes, Brittany's capital, to the port town of Brest covers roughly 245 km, while the route from Saint-Malo south to Vannes is about 170 km, giving you a sense of how compact yet varied the landscape is. Along the way you can explore the Pink Granite Coast near Perros-Guirec, wander the colourful harbour of Concarneau, or cross to the wild Crozon Peninsula where rugged cliffs meet sandy coves. Brittany's roads are well suited to campervans and motorhomes alike, with a mix of dual carriageways and quieter departmental routes that wind through artichoke fields and fishing villages. Hiring through Yescapa connects you directly with local owners across Brittany, so you can pick up a campervan in Rennes, Brest, Lorient or Quimper and set off with insider tips from someone who knows the area. Whether you want seafood platters in Cancale or surf breaks at La Torche, Brittany rewards those who take the slow road.

Best time to visit

Brittany is enjoyable from late spring right through to autumn. May and June bring long daylight hours and wildflower-covered clifftops, ideal for a campervan trip before the summer rush. The Festival Interceltique de Lorient in August draws hundreds of thousands of visitors celebrating Celtic music and culture, while the Route du Rock festival near Saint-Malo each August offers a brilliant live-music weekend. July and August are the busiest months, so booking your motorhome on Yescapa early lets you lock in competitive peer-to-peer rates. September and October are quieter, with mild coastal temperatures and excellent seafood season across Brittany — perfect for a more relaxed touring pace.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Brittany

Brittany benefits from an extensive network of free dual carriageways, known as voies express, meaning you can cross the region without paying tolls — a real bonus for motorhome and campervan travellers. The main routes, including the N12 from Rennes to Brest and the N165 from Nantes to Quimper, are well maintained and have regular rest areas. Speed limits for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are 110 km/h on dual carriageways and 80 km/h on single-carriageway roads. Watch for height restrictions at older underpasses on rural routes, and note that some coastal roads narrow considerably in summer.
