Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes — a region worth exploring

Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is home to Mont Blanc, western Europe's highest peak at 4,808 metres, making it a region where alpine grandeur meets volcanic landscapes and sweeping river valleys. From the Chaîne des Puys, a UNESCO-listed chain of 80 dormant volcanoes near Clermont-Ferrand, to the shimmering shores of Lac d'Annecy, there is an extraordinary range of scenery to discover at your own pace. The drive from Lyon to Chamonix covers roughly 220 km, while Clermont-Ferrand to Valence stretches around 170 km through the heart of the Massif Central and into the Rhône corridor — both routes offering constantly changing views. You can wind through the Gorges de l'Ardèche, explore the lavender-edged plateaux of the Drôme Provençale, or follow the shores of Lac du Bourget, France's largest natural lake. The region's well-maintained network of smaller departmental roads is ideal for campervans, and many mountain passes are comfortably accessible in a motorhome outside the winter months. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners spread across Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes — from city pick-ups in Lyon and Grenoble to quieter spots near the Vercors or Cantal. That peer-to-peer approach means a wider choice of campervans and competitive prices, so you can match the vehicle to your itinerary rather than the other way round.

Best time to visit

May to October is the prime window for a campervan trip through Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. June is ideal for the Fête des Lumières preparations in Lyon and for reaching higher alpine passes before the summer rush, while September brings the grape harvest across the Beaujolais and northern Rhône vineyards. Mountain campsites above 1,000 metres typically open from mid-June to mid-September, so plan accordingly if you want to park up near the peaks. Booking through Yescapa outside July and August often means better availability and more favourable hire rates from local owners, though summer remains wonderful for lakeside stops and long daylight hours.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes has an extensive motorway network, and most routes are tolled. The A7 (Autoroute du Soleil) running south from Lyon and the A43 towards Chambéry both use barrier toll plazas where you can pay by card or cash. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed in a higher toll category, so keep your vehicle weight in mind. Speed limits for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are 110 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on single carriageways. Mountain sections such as the A40 towards Mont Blanc include tunnels with height restrictions — check clearance before setting off. Rest areas with motorhome service points appear regularly along the A7 and A75.

We hired this camper Asier for our family holiday through Spain and France, what a great van it is with everything you need. Asier is very friendly and helpful even though there was a language barrier. We would definitely use again if we needed to.
