Why choose Birmingham for your road trip

Birmingham — a city worth exploring

Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter produces around 40% of all jewellery made in the United Kingdom, a tradition stretching back over 250 years. As England's second-largest city, Birmingham rewards curious travellers with a compelling mix of industrial heritage, world-class culture and green spaces. The city's canal network — longer than Venice's — threads past the restored warehouses of Brindleyplace and Gas Street Basin, where narrowboats and waterside cafés create a relaxed atmosphere. Art lovers can spend hours at the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, home to the world's finest collection of Pre-Raphaelite paintings, while the Bullring & Grand Central shopping district pulses with energy just steps away. Families enjoy Thinktank, Birmingham Science Museum, and the National SEA LIFE Centre Birmingham, both within easy reach of the city centre. Heading south-east, the Cotswolds begin roughly 50 km away, offering honey-coloured villages and rolling countryside. To the west, the dramatic landscapes of the Brecon Beacons lie around 140 km from the city, making them ideal for a longer campervan escape. Birmingham's central position in the West Midlands motorway network means you can reach most of England and Wales without a long drive. With Yescapa, you hire your motorhome or campervan directly from local owners, giving you flexible pick-up points across the city and honest advice on the best routes out of Birmingham.

Best time to visit

Birmingham comes alive from May to September, when long daylight hours make it easy to explore the canals and parks by campervan. The Frankfurt Christmas Market, the largest German-style Christmas market outside Germany, transforms the city centre each November and December — a memorable start or finish to a winter motorhome trip. Summer brings the Birmingham International Jazz Festival in July, filling venues across the city with live music. Book your Yescapa hire early for the summer months, when demand from local owners peaks. Autumn and spring offer quieter roads and more campsite availability in the surrounding countryside.

Where to park your motorhome

Parking a motorhome or campervan in Birmingham requires a little planning, as many city-centre car parks have height barriers of around 2.1 m. Look for open-air car parks without barriers, and always check maximum vehicle dimensions before you arrive. Overnight parking on public streets is generally permitted unless signs state otherwise, but dedicated motorhome stopovers are limited within the city itself. Using a campsite on the outskirts and travelling in by public transport is often the most practical approach.

  • Star City Car Park, 3km northeast — Large open-air car park in north Birmingham with no height barrier. Close to leisure and dining facilities. Suitable for larger vehicles during daytime visits.
  • Birmingham NEC Car Parks, 13km southeast — Spacious open-air car parks at the National Exhibition Centre, east of the city. Ideal for motorhomes attending events. Height-unrestricted areas available.
  • Cannon Hill Park Car Park, 4km south — Free car park beside Cannon Hill Park in Edgbaston, south of the city centre. Handy for visiting the park and nearby Midlands Arts Centre. Check posted size limits.

What our users say about our campervans and motorhomes in Birmingham

This was our first experience hiring a van and it was very good. Patrick was super helpful and friendly. We experienced some problems with the battery but Patrick was very responsive and helpful trying to solve this. The van has everything you need, although a cradle for your phone would be useful if using for directions as there is no satnav. The bed was surprisingly spacious and very comfy- we slept very well considering the 40 degree heat wave! We would recommend this van to you. Thank you Patrick!

Lovely campervan with everything you need, friendly owner and easy handover. The only down side was the security deposit process was difficult, as money was being transferred from a UK account to a French one. This was not instant on either transaction and unfortunately we ended up £58 down on our return due to exchange rates. I think using a deposit holding company would be a better option for both parties.

Stefano was great I added the airport shuttle option and he was on time and friendly - the van was great i took it up to the Dolomites and it was small enough for all the roads and carparks and the perfect compact van with everything you'd need. It was warm enough and comfortable and useful. Great experience!

Nil and his partner were second time renters now in July 2026, back then Nov 2024. It was great having them again and I only have positive things to say about them :)! They left the van in impeccable condition, each time. They are flexible with timing or if there is any issue. They communicate well. I'm super happy to rent to them again and if any other renter reads this, don't hesitate at all!
