San Francisco International Airport (SFO) sits just 21 km south of downtown San Francisco on the western shore of San Francisco Bay, making it one of the most conveniently located major airports on the US West Coast. From here, you can reach the iconic Golden Gate Bridge in roughly 30 minutes, while the towering redwoods of Muir Woods National Monument lie only 45 km to the north. Head south along the Pacific Coast Highway and within 120 km you will arrive at Santa Cruz, a laid-back surf town with a famous boardwalk. Travel 600 km further and you reach Los Angeles, opening up one of the world's most celebrated coastal drives. The region surrounding SFO is remarkably varied — from the rolling vineyards of Napa Valley, about 95 km north-east, to the rugged cliffs of Big Sur along the central California coastline. This diversity makes the airport an ideal launchpad for a campervan or motorhome adventure. City streets give way to open highways surprisingly quickly, and well-maintained rest stops dot the major routes heading in every direction. Whether you fancy wine country, ancient forests, or ocean-side bluffs, the road network fans out from San Francisco Airport with ease. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners based across the San Francisco Bay Area, giving you a wide choice of vehicles and the personal tips that only a resident can share.
The San Francisco Bay Area enjoys a long travel season, with May to October offering warm, dry days ideal for campervan touring. September and October are particularly pleasant — the city's famous fog lifts and temperatures often peak during this "Indian summer." Time your trip for the Outside Lands Music Festival in Golden Gate Park each August, or catch Fleet Week in early October for spectacular air shows over the bay. Winter months bring green hillsides and fewer crowds at popular stops like Yosemite and Big Sur. Booking through Yescapa outside peak summer can mean lower hire rates from local owners, so a spring or autumn trip around San Francisco Airport is well worth considering.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
Head north from San Francisco Airport through Napa Valley and loop back via Sonoma County — roughly 250 km of vineyard-lined roads. Stop at Yountville for world-class dining and Calistoga for natural hot springs. Campervan-friendly wineries with overnight parking make this a relaxed short break.
Drive north across the Golden Gate Bridge to Muir Woods, then continue 220 km up Highway 1 to Point Reyes National Seashore and Bodega Bay. Ancient redwood groves and dramatic headlands define this route. Compact campervans handle the narrow forest roads with ease.
From San Francisco Airport, follow Highway 1 south through Half Moon Bay, past the Bixby Creek Bridge, and on to San Simeon — home of Hearst Castle. At around 480 km return, this route offers cliff-top campsites and whale-watching viewpoints. A motorhome with a kitchen lets you cook with fresh seafood from Monterey's wharf.
Travel 450 km east from San Francisco Airport into the Sierra Nevada to reach Yosemite National Park. El Capitan, Half Dome, and Bridalveil Fall await inside the valley. Well-equipped campgrounds at Crane Flat and Hodgdon Meadow welcome motorhomes and campervans alike.
Set off from San Francisco Airport and drive 700 km down to Santa Barbara via Monterey, Big Sur, and San Luis Obispo. This legendary stretch of Highway 1 pairs ocean panoramas with charming coastal towns. Plan stops at Pfeiffer Beach and Pismo Beach for overnight campervan parking.
Cover around 1,100 km from San Francisco Airport north to the Redwood National and State Parks, looping inland through Shasta-Trinity National Forest. Visit Eureka's Victorian Old Town and the volcanic landscapes of Lassen Volcanic National Park on the return. This extended trip suits a well-stocked motorhome.

The region around San Francisco Airport offers campsites ranging from oceanfront pitches along the Pacific to forested spots among towering redwoods. Many sites provide full hook-ups for motorhomes, including electric, water, and waste disposal, while simpler pitches suit self-contained campervans. Facilities such as hot showers, laundry rooms, and picnic areas are common, and several parks sit within easy reach of hiking trails and beaches.
California's motorway network around San Francisco Airport is toll-free on most routes, though the Golden Gate Bridge charges a southbound toll collected electronically via FasTrak or licence-plate billing. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are generally 90 km/h (55 mph) on highways, compared with 105 km/h (65 mph) for cars. Interstate 101 and Interstate 280 connect SFO to the city centre, while US Route 1 hugs the coast southward. Rest areas with free parking appear regularly along major interstates. Vehicles over 12 metres may face lane restrictions on certain bridges, so check signage before crossing.
We hired Trina for 5 nights earlier this July. My girlfriend and I had a fantastic time on the island. Jandro was incredibly helpful, always on hand before and during the trip to answer any questions which really helped us navigate the island and enjoy our trip. The vehicle was fantastic, an incredible experience to drive. All the amenities were brilliant as well. I would highly recommend using Jandro and one of his vans for a fantastic Mallorca experience!
Communication with the owner was great, van was immaculate, heaps of choice, love the peer to peer concept. Easy to add an extra driver and ID checks were very thorough but straightforward. Changing dates wasn't so easy, the owner was great, but the process at the back end took some manual effort. Teething problems, not a big deal. Main area that needs improving (for me anyway) is the deposit. There was a single line in a table stating Deposit: cash or transfer, that I hadn't seen. The owner asked for the cash or a transfer when we were at the car, which he explained was normal process, but Yescapa could have explained beforehand. I transferred €2000 directly to the owner, which didn't feel comfortable. I had expected this would all be done via Yescapa. I ended up losing €45 in exchange rate variations + fees as well, the owner's bank had challenges which meant it to 5 days to get a lot of cash back. It was lucky we had that amount at hand. I would use Yescapa again. I hope they can tidy up and improve the processes though.
Very easy and open person… all went well , on time and with all the agremants.
Incredible time spent across the south of France with an incredible van! From beach, lakes, mountains and fields, it got me places I didn’t even pre conceive. Can’t speak more highly of my over all experience from van collection at train station to drop off. Drives smoother than my Suzuki jimny and can confirm very 6ft 4 friendly.
We had an amazing experience hiring Eli's campervan! It was perfect for our family of four – myself, my partner, and our two young daughters. The van was spotless, comfortable, and had everything we needed for our trip. It was easy to drive, well-equipped, and made exploring the malaga so much more enjoyable. The owners were friendly, helpful, and made the whole rental process smooth from start to finish. We made some unforgettable family memories and wouldn't hesitate to rent this campervan again. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a fun, comfortable, and hassle-free adventure in Spain. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
We had a great experience. All went smoothly and the camper van was perfect. Mike was very accommodating and communicative throughout and we would recommend highly.
