Why choose San Francisco for your road trip

San Francisco — a city worth exploring

San Francisco's iconic Golden Gate Bridge stretches 2,737 metres across the strait connecting the Bay to the Pacific Ocean, and has welcomed visitors since 1937. The city packs an extraordinary amount into its compact 121 square kilometres, from the former island prison of Alcatraz to the colourful murals of the Mission District. You can ride one of the city's historic cable cars — the last manually operated cable car system in the world — up to Nob Hill, then wander through the 412-hectare Golden Gate Park, home to the California Academy of Sciences and the de Young Museum. Fisherman's Wharf buzzes with seafood stalls and sea lions, while the Presidio offers forested trails with views across the Bay. San Francisco also makes a brilliant base for longer adventures: the Napa Valley wine region sits roughly 95 km to the north, and the surf town of Santa Cruz is about 115 km to the south along the coast. Driving a larger vehicle through San Francisco means navigating famously steep hills and tight residential streets, so planning your route in advance is worthwhile. With Yescapa, you hire a campervan or motorhome directly from a local owner, which means you can arrange a convenient pick-up point and get first-hand tips on the best routes out of the city. It is a peer-to-peer approach that keeps things personal, flexible, and often more affordable than traditional hire.

Best time to visit

San Francisco enjoys a mild climate year-round, making it a great destination in any season. September and October — known locally as "Indian summer" — bring the warmest days, ideal for exploring by campervan. The city's famous Fleet Week in October features spectacular air shows over the Bay. June's Pride Parade is another highlight, drawing visitors from around the world. Book your motorhome through Yescapa early for summer months, when peer-to-peer hire gives you access to a wider choice of vehicles at competitive prices. Spring and winter are quieter, with easier campsite availability along the coast.

San Francisco to Sacramento and Gold Country

145km northeast 3–6 days

Travel 145 km north-east from San Francisco to California's capital, Sacramento. Tour the Old Sacramento Waterfront and visit Sutter's Fort State Historic Park. Continue into the Gold Country foothills to explore the historic town of Placerville. Three to six days gives you time to enjoy the region's heritage trails at a relaxed pace.

San Francisco to Los Angeles via the Pacific Coast Highway

615km southeast 5–8 days

This epic 615 km drive south-east from San Francisco to Los Angeles follows the Pacific Coast Highway through Big Sur, San Simeon — home to Hearst Castle — and Santa Barbara. Where to park your motorhome

Parking a larger vehicle in San Francisco requires some planning. Street parking for motorhomes and campervans is restricted in many residential areas, and most city-centre garages have height limits of around 2 metres. Overnight parking on public streets is generally not permitted for oversized vehicles. Look for dedicated RV-friendly car parks or use park-and-ride options on the outskirts, then take public transport into the centre. Always check posted signs for time limits and size restrictions.

  • Pier 39 Parking Garage, Adjacent to the city — Large waterfront garage near Fisherman's Wharf. Height limit of around 2.1 m, so best suited to smaller campervans. Paid hourly and daily rates available.
  • Crissy Field Parking, 3km northwest — Open-air car park in the Presidio with views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Accommodates taller vehicles and offers easy access to waterfront trails. Free with time limits.
  • Candlestick Point State Recreation Area Parking, 10km southeast — Spacious car park in the south-east of the city, suitable for larger motorhomes. Access to bay-side walking paths. Small parking fee applies.

We hired Trina for 5 nights earlier this July. My girlfriend and I had a fantastic time on the island. Jandro was incredibly helpful, always on hand before and during the trip to answer any questions which really helped us navigate the island and enjoy our trip. The vehicle was fantastic, an incredible experience to drive. All the amenities were brilliant as well. I would highly recommend using Jandro and one of his vans for a fantastic Mallorca experience!

Communication with the owner was great, van was immaculate, heaps of choice, love the peer to peer concept. Easy to add an extra driver and ID checks were very thorough but straightforward. Changing dates wasn't so easy, the owner was great, but the process at the back end took some manual effort. Teething problems, not a big deal. Main area that needs improving (for me anyway) is the deposit. There was a single line in a table stating Deposit: cash or transfer, that I hadn't seen. The owner asked for the cash or a transfer when we were at the car, which he explained was normal process, but Yescapa could have explained beforehand. I transferred €2000 directly to the owner, which didn't feel comfortable. I had expected this would all be done via Yescapa. I ended up losing €45 in exchange rate variations + fees as well, the owner's bank had challenges which meant it to 5 days to get a lot of cash back. It was lucky we had that amount at hand. I would use Yescapa again. I hope they can tidy up and improve the processes though.

Incredible time spent across the south of France with an incredible van! From beach, lakes, mountains and fields, it got me places I didn’t even pre conceive. Can’t speak more highly of my over all experience from van collection at train station to drop off. Drives smoother than my Suzuki jimny and can confirm very 6ft 4 friendly.

We had an amazing experience hiring Eli's campervan! It was perfect for our family of four – myself, my partner, and our two young daughters. The van was spotless, comfortable, and had everything we needed for our trip. It was easy to drive, well-equipped, and made exploring the malaga so much more enjoyable. The owners were friendly, helpful, and made the whole rental process smooth from start to finish. We made some unforgettable family memories and wouldn't hesitate to rent this campervan again. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a fun, comfortable, and hassle-free adventure in Spain. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
