Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria — a region worth exploring

Gran Canaria's 236 kilometres of coastline wrap around an almost circular island that rises to 1,949 metres at Pico de las Nieves, creating microclimates so varied the island is often called a miniature continent. From the towering sand dunes of Maspalomas on the southern tip to the volcanic caldera of Bandama in the north-east, the landscape shifts dramatically within short distances — Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to Maspalomas is just 55 km, yet the drive takes you from a bustling Atlantic port city to sweeping desert-like terrain. Inland, the Roque Nublo monolith stands at 1,813 metres, offering panoramic views across the island and, on clear days, all the way to Mount Teide on neighbouring Tenerife. The Barranco de Guayadeque, a deep ravine carved into the eastern slopes, shelters cave dwellings and endemic flora found nowhere else on Earth. Driving from Agaete in the north-west to Mogán in the south-west covers roughly 85 km of winding mountain roads that reward every turn with new vistas. Gran Canaria suits campervan travel particularly well: compact enough to cross in a morning, yet rich enough to fill weeks of exploration. A motorhome gives you the freedom to wake up beside a black-sand beach one day and a pine forest the next. Through Yescapa, you hire your campervan directly from local owners across the island, choosing from a range of vehicles that match your group size and travel style — a genuinely personal way to discover Gran Canaria at your own pace.

Best time to visit

Gran Canaria enjoys mild temperatures year-round, making it a fantastic campervan destination in any season. Spring brings the colourful Fiesta de la Rama in Agaete each August, while the famous Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Carnival in February is one of the largest in Spain. Summer and early autumn are the busiest months, so booking your Yescapa hire ahead ensures you secure the perfect vehicle. Winter is wonderfully warm compared to mainland Europe, with daytime highs around 20 °C — ideal for exploring mountain trails and coastal roads without the crowds. Campsites across the island remain open all year, giving you flexibility whenever you choose to visit.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria has a well-maintained motorway network connecting the main towns. The GC-1 runs along the eastern and southern coast from Las Palmas to Mogán, while the GC-2 heads north-west to Agaete. Motorways on the island are toll-free, so you can travel freely in your motorhome without extra costs. Speed limits for vehicles over 3,500 kg are generally 80 km/h on motorways and 70 km/h on dual carriageways. Inland roads are narrower and windier, particularly through mountain passes — take your time and use lay-bys to let traffic pass. Fuel stations are plentiful along the coast but sparser in the highlands, so fill up before heading into the interior.
