Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Canary

Canary — a region worth exploring

The Canary Islands stretch across seven main islands off the northwest coast of Africa, with Tenerife's Mount Teide rising to 3,718 metres as Spain's highest peak and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the lunar landscapes of Lanzarote's Timanfaya National Park to the ancient laurel forests of La Gomera's Garajonay, each island offers a completely different world to explore. The distance from Lanzarote in the east to La Palma in the west spans roughly 500 km by ferry, while a circuit of Gran Canaria covers around 230 km of winding coastal and mountain roads. Fuerteventura's 150 km of sandy beaches make it the longest coastline of any Canary Island, and the Roque Nublo monolith on Gran Canaria stands at 1,813 metres above sea level, offering panoramic views across the volcanic interior. Driving here means navigating dramatic elevation changes, from sea-level resort towns to high-altitude passes in a single afternoon, so having the right vehicle matters. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners based across the islands, giving you the flexibility to hop between Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura at your own pace. Whether you prefer a compact campervan for narrow mountain roads or a fully equipped motorhome for longer stays, the peer-to-peer model means you benefit from local knowledge and competitive prices throughout the Canary Islands.

Best time to visit

The Canary Islands enjoy mild temperatures year-round, making any season ideal for a campervan trip. Spring brings the colourful Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in February or March, one of the world's largest carnival celebrations. Autumn is perfect for exploring volcanic trails without the busiest summer crowds, and winter temperatures rarely dip below 18°C at the coast. Book your Canary Islands motorhome through Yescapa during the quieter months of October to April to take advantage of lower peer-to-peer hire rates and wider vehicle availability across the islands.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Canary

Roads across the Canary Islands are toll-free, so you can travel without worrying about extra charges. Major motorways such as the TF-1 and TF-5 on Tenerife and the GC-1 on Gran Canaria are well maintained and connect key towns efficiently. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are typically 80 km/h on motorways and 70 km/h on secondary roads. Mountain routes can include tight bends and steep gradients, particularly on smaller islands like La Gomera, so a compact campervan may be more comfortable on those stretches. Rest areas with parking suitable for larger vehicles are available along the main routes on Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

What our users say about our campervans and motorhomes in Canary

This was our first experience hiring a van and it was very good. Patrick was super helpful and friendly. We experienced some problems with the battery but Patrick was very responsive and helpful trying to solve this. The van has everything you need, although a cradle for your phone would be useful if using for directions as there is no satnav. The bed was surprisingly spacious and very comfy- we slept very well considering the 40 degree heat wave! We would recommend this van to you. Thank you Patrick!

Lovely campervan with everything you need, friendly owner and easy handover. The only down side was the security deposit process was difficult, as money was being transferred from a UK account to a French one. This was not instant on either transaction and unfortunately we ended up £58 down on our return due to exchange rates. I think using a deposit holding company would be a better option for both parties.

Stefano was great I added the airport shuttle option and he was on time and friendly - the van was great i took it up to the Dolomites and it was small enough for all the roads and carparks and the perfect compact van with everything you'd need. It was warm enough and comfortable and useful. Great experience!

Nil and his partner were second time renters now in July 2026, back then Nov 2024. It was great having them again and I only have positive things to say about them :)! They left the van in impeccable condition, each time. They are flexible with timing or if there is any issue. They communicate well. I'm super happy to rent to them again and if any other renter reads this, don't hesitate at all!
