Why choose Almería for your road trip

Almería — a city worth exploring

Almería's Alcazaba fortress, built in 955 AD by Caliph Abd ar-Rahman III, is the second largest Muslim fortification in Spain after the Alhambra. Perched above the Mediterranean coast in south-east Andalusia, this sun-drenched city blends Moorish heritage with dramatic desert landscapes that have doubled as film sets for decades. The Tabernas Desert, Europe's only true desert, lies just 30 km north and has served as the backdrop for countless westerns. In the old quarter, the Cathedral of Almería — part church, part fortress — was built in the 16th century to withstand pirate raids. Along the waterfront, the Cable Inglés (English Cable) is a striking iron ore-loading jetty dating from 1904, now a protected industrial monument. For a change of pace, the Museo de Almería houses archaeological finds spanning from the Neolithic to the Roman era. The coastline east of the city opens into the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, where volcanic cliffs meet turquoise coves — ideal for slow touring. Granada is roughly 170 km to the north-west, while Murcia sits about 220 km to the north-east, making Almería a superb base for longer road trips across southern Spain. The roads around the coast are well-suited to campervans, with wide routes and plenty of designated stopping points. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners in the Almería area, giving you insider tips and a more personal start to your journey.

Best time to visit

Almería enjoys one of the warmest climates in Europe, making it a year-round destination for campervan travel. Spring and early autumn are especially pleasant for exploring the coast and desert landscapes at a relaxed pace. In August, the Feria de Almería fills the city with live music, flamenco, and street celebrations — well worth timing your trip around. Winter remains mild and quiet, ideal if you prefer emptier campsites and open roads. With Yescapa, you can often find better hire rates outside peak summer months, thanks to flexible pricing set by local owners. Book ahead for July and August to secure your preferred motorhome.

We absolutely loved our time in the caddy! Everything was great, from the collection, the functionality and the communication. The van is small but mighty, the owners have thought of every little detail (sink, shower, storage, kitchen, and a good sized comfy bed). We highly recommend using Yescapa and hiring this van- perfect for your dolomites adventure!

Both Jesus and Susana were very communicative and made the rental process very easy. The van is basically new in very good condition and easy to handle. It was fun cooking in remote places having a beautiful view and having a large fridge really helped to keep all cool and fresh. We had a nice time with it and would certainly recommend it to others.
