Toulouse sits where the Garonne River meets the Canal du Midi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that stretches 240 km eastward to the Mediterranean. Known as La Ville Rose for its distinctive pink terracotta brickwork, the city is home to the Cité de l'Espace, a space-themed park where you can walk through a full-scale replica of the Mir space station. The Basilique Saint-Sernin, the largest Romanesque church in Europe, anchors the old town, while the Musée des Augustins houses paintings and sculptures spanning seven centuries inside a former Augustinian convent. Across the river, the Jardin Japonais Pierre Baudis offers a peaceful retreat with its traditional tea garden and koi ponds. Carcassonne lies just 95 km to the south-east, and the foothills of the Pyrenees begin roughly 100 km south, making Toulouse a superb base for longer journeys. The roads heading south are well-maintained dual carriageways, and the flat terrain around the city centre makes navigating in a larger vehicle straightforward. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners in and around Toulouse, which means flexible pick-up points across the city and honest advice on the best routes from people who know the area. Whether you are planning a weekend loop to Albi or a week-long drive into the mountains, starting from Toulouse puts everything within easy reach.
Toulouse enjoys warm, dry summers and mild springs, making May to September the prime window for a campervan trip. The Toulouse d'Été festival fills July and August with open-air concerts and performances across the city. In February, the Fête de la Violette celebrates the city's long association with violet cultivation. Book your motorhome through Yescapa well ahead for July and August, when demand from local owners peaks. Spring and early autumn offer quieter roads and more campsite availability, plus comfortable driving temperatures. Hiring outside peak months often means better daily rates on the platform.
Toulouse is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 150 km south from Toulouse into the Pyrenean foothills. Stop at Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges for its hilltop cathedral, then continue to Bagnères-de-Luchon for thermal baths and mountain trails. Campervan parking is plentiful at designated aires along the valley roads, and the scenery rewards every turn.
Follow the Canal du Midi for 190 km east from Toulouse to Montpellier. Pause at Castelnaudary, the birthplace of cassoulet, and explore the medieval citadel of Béziers. Motorhome service areas dot the route, and you can overnight beside the canal at several dedicated stops before reaching the Mediterranean coast.
Drive 250 km west from Toulouse to reach the Atlantic surf town of Biarritz. Break the journey at Auch to see its Renaissance cathedral, then pass through Pau for views of the Pyrenean peaks. Campervan-friendly aires are well spaced along the A64, and Biarritz offers beachside parking for larger vehicles.
Cover 300 km south-west from Toulouse across the border into Spain. Stop at Foix to visit its triple-towered castle, then cross the Pyrenees via the Puymorens tunnel. Girona makes a rewarding overnight halt before Barcelona. Plan for motorway tolls in Spain and book a campsite on Barcelona's outskirts in advance.
A short 95 km south-east from Toulouse brings you to the walled city of Carcassonne. Visit the Château Comtal inside the fortified citadel, then sample local Minervois wines in the surrounding villages. A dedicated motorhome aire sits just below the ramparts, offering easy access without the hassle of city-centre parking.
Just 75 km north-east of Toulouse, Albi is an easy day trip or weekend escape. Explore the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec housed in the Palais de la Berbie, and admire the fortress-like Cathédrale Sainte-Cécile. A campervan aire beside the River Tarn offers free overnight stays with views of the old town's red-brick skyline.

Toulouse and its surrounding countryside offer a good mix of urban and rural campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. In the city itself you will find sites with full electrical hook-ups, service points, and modern shower blocks. Further out, lakeside and riverside pitches provide a quieter setting with generous space for larger vehicles. Most sites are open from April to October, with several operating year-round.
Toulouse operates several park-and-ride (relais) car parks on the outskirts, many of which accept larger vehicles and connect to the metro. Overnight parking in a motorhome or campervan is not permitted on most city-centre streets, so plan to use a dedicated aire or relais. Always check height barriers before entering underground car parks, as most have a 1.90 m limit. The dedicated aire near Pont des Demoiselles is the most convenient option for staying close to the centre.
I had the most wonderful trip in Eve’s van. It has everything you need, a great sized fridge, a large comfy bed, cooking equipment, electrics to be off grid, a great shower & toilet. The van ran very smoothly and was a perfect size even driving through the towns was no problem at all. They were very accommodating, helping me with local tip and recommendations. I’d 100% recommend this van to anyone thinking of taking a road trip, you won’t regret it :)
Inigio and his lovely girlfriend looked after Dolly for one week here in the Algarve area. They brought her back clean and in really good shape. Before and during the rental period we had a very good dialogue. I can highly reccomend them to lend your car. :-)
Our trip was fantastic, couldn't recommend travelling Sicily via Camper further. Angela and Luca made that super easy with clear comms and help pre booking, during holiday and after. pick up and drop off was a breeze. Clear instructions on how to use the van. All in all great trip.
Fabio made the whole process super easy and was very flexible with our plans. The van was perfect. Practically brand new and had all we needed.
Fantastic experience. Raul really went above and beyond to help us out and was always responsive with any queries we had. The van was in excellent condition, had everything we needed, and was ideal for our trip into the Pyrenees, plus heading south for the solar eclipse. Would highly recommend.
Very helpful owner and great vehicle! Had a great time in the Mundaka.
