Why choose Montpellier for your road trip

Montpellier — a city worth exploring

Montpellier's Place de la Comédie, one of the largest pedestrian squares in Europe, has welcomed visitors beneath its iconic Three Graces fountain since 1790. This sun-drenched city in the Languedoc region blends medieval heritage with a youthful energy — nearly a third of its population are students. Wander through the Écusson, the historic heart of the city, where narrow lanes open onto grand hôtels particuliers and leafy squares. The Musée Fabre houses one of France's finest collections of European paintings, while the Jardin des Plantes, established in 1593, is the oldest botanical garden in mainland France. Head south and you reach the Mediterranean beaches of Palavas-les-Flots, just 12 km away, perfect for a quick seaside stop. Inland, the medieval hilltop village of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert sits 42 km to the north-west, offering dramatic gorge scenery and Romanesque architecture. The flat coastal roads around Montpellier make driving a motorhome straightforward, while the surrounding garrigue landscape rewards those who explore by campervan with lavender-scented hills and quiet vineyard routes. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners in and around Montpellier, giving you flexible pick-up options and the kind of insider tips only a resident can share. Whether you are planning a coastal loop or a longer campervan adventure into the Cévennes, Montpellier is a brilliant base to begin.

Best time to visit

Montpellier enjoys a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild winters, making it a year-round destination. June to September is peak season, ideal for combining city culture with beach days at nearby Palavas-les-Flots. In July, the Festival de Radio France et Montpellier fills the city with classical music and jazz. October brings the Internationales de la Guitare, a celebrated guitar festival. Book your campervan or motorhome through Yescapa outside peak months and you can often find better rates from local owners in Montpellier, with quieter roads and more campsite availability along the coast.

Fantastic rental, they were so helpful and got us all set up for our first ever campervan trip. The van was spotless and practically brand new. Everything was so easy to use and we just sent up the bed each day as we set off for each new place.

We absolutely loved our time with Javier’s Fiat campervan and would happily recommend it. From the outset, Javier was incredibly helpful and accommodating, answering all our questions and requests, arriving exactly when agreed and giving us an excellent, thorough handover. The van itself was brilliantly equipped, stylish, comfortable and surprisingly spacious, with loads of clever storage. It genuinely felt like a little home on wheels rather than simply a rental camper. Another big plus is just how user-friendly everything is. Even if you have little or no previous campervan experience, you could feel completely confident using it. Javier provided clear instructions for all the important systems — water, pumps, lighting, electrics and general operation — and everything was incredibly straightforward and simple to use. Nothing felt complicated or intimidating. We travelled both on-grid and completely off-grid, and it handled both perfectly. The solar and battery system worked brilliantly, the fridge stayed perfectly cold, and the enormous water capacity was a massive bonus — we showered normally throughout our trip and never managed to run out of water! And the shower itself deserves a special mention: such a clever use of space and genuinely one of our favourite features. On the road it was equally impressive. It drove really well, was surprisingly economical on fuel, and its size was absolutely perfect for travelling around Spain. We took it through little roads and villages without any drama and could generally park it in a normal car-sized space — a huge advantage compared with travelling in a large motorhome. The interior design is super chic and homely, the layout has been really well thought through, and there was more than enough space and storage for everything we needed. Overall, fantastic value for money, a great owner and a fabulous little campervan that gave us exactly the adventure we wanted. Whether you’re an experienced campervan traveller or trying one for the first time, it’s an incredibly easy and enjoyable van to travel in. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would absolutely rent it again. Highly recommended — thank you, Javier! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
