Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Haute-Garonne

Haute-Garonne — a region worth exploring

Haute-Garonne stretches from the bustling streets of Toulouse — France's fourth-largest city and European capital of the aerospace industry — all the way south to the Spanish border, where Pyrenean peaks rise above 3,000 metres. The drive from Toulouse to Bagnères-de-Luchon, the département's most celebrated mountain spa town, covers roughly 140 km and takes you through rolling farmland, medieval bastide villages, and deep river gorges. Head east for about 110 km and you reach the prehistoric caves of the Gargas network near Aventignan, home to hand stencils dating back 27,000 years. Along the way, the Basilica of Saint-Sernin in Toulouse — the largest remaining Romanesque church in Europe — and the Canal du Midi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site threading through the northern plains, give you plenty of reasons to pause. The landscape shifts dramatically as you travel south: wide, motorhome-friendly plains give way to winding mountain roads better suited to a compact campervan. Altitude service areas around Saint-Béat and Luchon offer fresh-water fill-ups and waste disposal for self-contained vehicles. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners spread across Toulouse and the surrounding towns, so you can pick up a campervan or motorhome close to your starting point and set off without delay. Whether you fancy canal-side cycling or high-altitude hiking, Haute-Garonne packs an impressive range of experiences into one département.

Best time to visit

Haute-Garonne is a year-round destination, though late spring and early autumn are especially rewarding for campervan travel. May and June bring warm days ideal for exploring the Pyrenean foothills, while September offers quieter mountain roads and golden light over the Canal du Midi. In July, Toulouse hosts the Festival Toulouse d'Été, filling the city with open-air concerts and performances. Winter visitors can base themselves near Luchon-Superbagnères for skiing. Yescapa's peer-to-peer model means you often find better rates outside peak summer, and booking a few weeks ahead in spring or autumn secures a wide choice of vehicles across Haute-Garonne.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Haute-Garonne

Haute-Garonne's main motorways — the A61, A62, A64, and A68 — all converge on Toulouse and are toll roads operated by barrier systems where you collect a ticket on entry and pay on exit. Tolls can be settled by card or cash, and the Liber-t electronic tag speeds things up. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed as Category 2 vehicles and pay higher tolls. Speed limits for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are 110 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on single-carriageway roads. South of Saint-Gaudens, the A64 narrows and mountain gradients increase, so keep an eye on engine temperature and use lower gears on descents. Rest areas with motorhome service points appear regularly along the A64 corridor.
