Why choose Carcassonne for your road trip

Carcassonne — a city worth exploring

Carcassonne's medieval fortified city, known as La Cité, is one of Europe's most complete walled settlements, with 52 towers and 3 km of double ramparts dating back to the Gallo-Roman era. Perched above the River Aude in the Languedoc region of southern France, this UNESCO World Heritage Site draws visitors from around the world. Beyond the walls, you can explore the Basilica of Saints Nazarius and Celsus, with its remarkable stained-glass windows, or wander through the Château Comtal, a 12th-century castle within the fortress. The Canal du Midi, another UNESCO-listed treasure, passes through the lower town and offers peaceful towpath walks. Toulouse lies just 95 km to the north-west, while the Mediterranean coast at Narbonne is roughly 60 km to the east, making Carcassonne an ideal base for wider exploration. The surrounding countryside features rolling vineyards of the Corbières and Minervois appellations, with quiet roads well suited to larger vehicles. Hiring a campervan or motorhome through Yescapa connects you directly with local owners who know the region's best routes and overnight spots. With a campervan, you can combine the history of the citadel with wine-country drives and coastal detours, all at your own pace.

Best time to visit

Carcassonne enjoys a warm Mediterranean-influenced climate, and the season from May to October is particularly rewarding for touring by campervan. In July, the Festival de Carcassonne fills La Cité with open-air concerts, theatre and dance performances over several weeks. August brings the famous Embrasement de la Cité, a spectacular fireworks display over the ramparts. If you prefer quieter roads and campsites, May, June and September offer comfortable temperatures and easier parking for motorhomes. Hiring through Yescapa gives you access to peer-to-peer pricing, often more flexible than traditional hire companies, so booking a few weeks ahead can secure a great deal even in peak summer.
