Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Northumberland

Northumberland — a region worth exploring

Northumberland's Hadrian's Wall stretches 73 miles from Wallsend on the River Tyne to Bowness-on-Solway on the Cumbrian coast, making it the largest surviving Roman monument anywhere in Europe. This vast county in England's far north-east is home to the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park, one of the largest areas of protected night sky on the continent, centred around Kielder Water and Forest Park. From the dramatic coastal fortress of Bamburgh Castle to the tidal causeway leading to Holy Island (Lindisfarne), there is an extraordinary range of landscapes to discover at your own pace. The distance from Alnwick to Berwick-upon-Tweed is roughly 50 km along the A1, while the drive from Hexham westward to Kielder village covers about 56 km of winding rural roads through some of the most peaceful countryside in England. Northumberland's quiet single-track lanes, wide open moorlands, and long stretches of near-empty beach make it a superb destination for campervan and motorhome travel. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across the region, choosing from a range of vehicles that suit everything from a coastal weekend to a fortnight exploring the Cheviot Hills and the Northumberland National Park.

Best time to visit

May to September is the prime window for a campervan trip through Northumberland, when daylight hours are long and coastal paths are at their best. The Alnwick Garden hosts its annual food festival each September, while the Northumberland Day celebrations in late June bring communities together across the county. Book early for July and August, the most popular months for motorhome hire. Outside peak season, Yescapa's peer-to-peer pricing often means more affordable rates in spring and autumn, ideal for quieter visits to Hadrian's Wall or stargazing at Kielder Observatory.

The best road trips in Northumberland

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Heritage Coast Run

130 km 3–6 days

Follow Northumberland's coastline from Amble north to Berwick-upon-Tweed over roughly 130 km. Stop at Dunstanburgh Castle, explore the harbour village of Craster for its famous kippers, and cross the causeway to Holy Island. Plenty of campervan-friendly parking near the beaches.

The Hadrian's Wall Trail

180 km 3–6 days

Trace the line of Hadrian's Wall across Northumberland from Chollerford to Birdoswald, covering around 180 km with detours. Visit Housesteads Roman Fort and Vindolanda, then loop back through Haltwhistle. The route suits both campervans and motorhomes, with several dedicated stopovers.

The Dark Sky Circuit

300 km 5–8 days

Start in Hexham and head north-west to Kielder Water, then loop through Bellingham and Rothbury before returning — around 300 km in total. Northumberland's Dark Sky Park offers remarkable stargazing. Motorhome pitches are available at Kielder Waterside and along the route.

The Castle and Coast Loop

350 km 5–8 days

A 350 km loop from Alnwick taking in Bamburgh Castle, the Farne Islands boat trips from Seahouses, Chillingham Castle, and the Coquet Valley. Northumberland's mix of coast and countryside keeps every day varied. Campervan hook-ups are easy to find at sites along the way.

The Borders and Valleys Explorer

500 km 7–11 days

Cover around 500 km from Morpeth through the Coquet Valley, up to Wooler in the Cheviots, across to Kelso on the Scottish border, and back via Kielder. This longer Northumberland route rewards with big skies and quiet roads ideal for motorhome touring at a relaxed pace.

The Grand Northumberland Tour

600 km 10–15 days

A comprehensive 600 km circuit linking Newcastle, Hadrian's Wall, Kielder Forest, the Cheviot Hills, Berwick-upon-Tweed, and the full Heritage Coast back south through Alnmouth. Allow two weeks to enjoy Northumberland fully in a campervan, with time for walking, wildlife, and local food.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Northumberland

Northumberland has no toll roads, so you can travel freely across the county. The A1 is the main north–south route, running from Newcastle up to the Scottish border, and is dual carriageway for much of its length. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.05 tonnes are 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 mph on dual carriageways. Many inland roads, particularly around Kielder and the Cheviot Hills, are narrow single-track lanes with passing places — take your time and use lay-bys. Rest areas and fuel stops are well spaced along the A1 but less frequent on rural routes, so plan ahead when heading into remoter areas.
