Why hire a campervan or motorhome in North East

North East — a region worth exploring

North East England's Hadrian's Wall stretches 73 miles from Wallsend on the River Tyne to Bowness-on-Solway, making it the largest surviving Roman monument anywhere in Britain. This is a region where rugged coastline, open moorland, and centuries of history come together in a landscape that feels made for exploring at your own pace. From the towering Angel of the North near Gateshead to the windswept Farne Islands off the Northumberland coast, there is always something worth pulling over for. The cathedral city of Durham, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, sits just 15 miles south of Newcastle upon Tyne, while the market town of Alnwick — home to Alnwick Castle and its celebrated gardens — is around 55 miles further north. Between these points you will find quiet valleys, long sandy beaches, and some of the darkest skies in England, with Northumberland International Dark Sky Park offering extraordinary stargazing. The roads here are well suited to campervans and motorhomes alike, with wide A-roads connecting the coast to the Pennine hills and plenty of space to breathe. Whether you are tracing the River Tees through its gorge or parking up beside Bamburgh Castle, the North East rewards those who take their time. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across the region, choosing from a range of vehicles that suit your group and your route perfectly.

Best time to visit

May to September is the most popular window for a campervan trip through the North East, with long daylight hours and mild coastal breezes making it ideal for outdoor exploring. The Durham Miners' Gala in July draws thousands to the city centre each year, while the Alnwick Garden hosts its annual Spooky Festival every October half-term. Spring and autumn bring quieter roads and excellent availability at campsites across Northumberland and County Durham. Booking through Yescapa outside peak months often means better rates from local owners, so you can enjoy the North East with more flexibility and fewer crowds.

The North East is served by the A1(M) motorway running north–south, which is toll-free and connects Durham, Newcastle, and Northumberland. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.05 tonnes are 60 mph on dual carriageways and 50 mph on single carriageway roads. The A69 links Newcastle to Carlisle along Hadrian's Wall, offering a scenic but well-maintained route. We absolutely loved our time in the caddy! Everything was great, from the collection, the functionality and the communication. The van is small but mighty, the owners have thought of every little detail (sink, shower, storage, kitchen, and a good sized comfy bed). We highly recommend using Yescapa and hiring this van- perfect for your dolomites adventure!

Both Jesus and Susana were very communicative and made the rental process very easy. The van is basically new in very good condition and easy to handle. It was fun cooking in remote places having a beautiful view and having a large fridge really helped to keep all cool and fresh. We had a nice time with it and would certainly recommend it to others.
