Why choose Birtley for your road trip

Birtley — a city worth exploring

Birtley sits just 10 km south of Newcastle upon Tyne, straddling the old Great North Road that has connected London to Edinburgh for centuries. Though compact, this Gateshead borough town offers easy access to some of the North East's finest attractions. The Angel of the North, Antony Gormley's 20-metre-tall steel sculpture, stands on a hillside less than 2 km away — a landmark visible to around 33 million passing travellers each year. Head north and you can explore the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art on the Gateshead quayside, or cross the iconic Gateshead Millennium Bridge to reach Newcastle's bustling centre. Durham, with its UNESCO-listed cathedral and castle, lies just 18 km to the south, making it an easy day trip. The surrounding countryside opens up towards the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where wide moorland roads are well suited to larger vehicles. Birtley itself provides a practical base with good road links via the A1(M), letting you avoid city-centre congestion while still being minutes from major sights. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners in the Tyneside area, giving you the flexibility to explore at your own pace. Whether you are heading for Hadrian's Wall to the north-west or the Durham Dales to the south, Birtley puts you right at the crossroads of the North East's best touring routes.

Best time to visit

Birtley and the wider North East are wonderful to visit from May through September, when longer days make the most of outdoor attractions. The Great North Run, held each September in nearby Gateshead and South Shields, brings a festival atmosphere to the region — plan your campervan trip around it for a memorable weekend. Summer is the busiest period, so booking your motorhome through Yescapa early helps you secure the best choice from local owners at fair peer-to-peer prices. Autumn brings golden colours to the Durham Dales and quieter roads, ideal for a relaxed hire.

Great experience renting the Jimny. The owners were brilliant to deal with from start to finish, and the Jeep was in excellent condition. It was perfect for exploring the Algarve. Would definitely recommend and would happily rent from them again!

Clean, well-maintained vehicle that gave us so many great memories! We traveled to many places and drove around 900 km ourselves, and it handled everything flawlessly. Thanks to its size, parking was super easy, we could fit anywhere, and we were able to sleep in spots where a different kind of campervan wouldn't have worked. It is fully equipped with everything provided, even extra games for beach days! The bed and bedding were clean, and it has a really comfortable mattress. The owners were super nice and sweet. Everything went smoothly during both pickup and drop-off, and they were always there to help whenever we needed it, even when we got a bit lost! 😅 Plus point that they were super cool and easy to talk to. P.S. The AC works like a charm!
