Lagos sits at the western edge of the Algarve, where the Bensafrim River meets the Atlantic through a harbour that once launched Portugal's Age of Discoveries in the 15th century. The Ponta da Piedade headland, just south of the old town, features a maze of golden sandstone sea stacks and grottoes carved by centuries of ocean swells — you can explore them by boat or from the clifftop walkways above. Within the historic centre, the Igreja de Santo António dazzles with gilded Baroque woodwork, while the adjacent Museu Municipal Dr. José Formosinho houses archaeological finds spanning Roman and Moorish eras. For a change of pace, Meia Praia stretches over 4 km of sand east of the marina, offering plenty of space even in summer. Sagres and its dramatic clifftop fortress sit 33 km to the west, and the lively resort town of Albufeira is roughly 65 km to the east — both make excellent day trips by road. The coastal N125 and the A22 motorway give you smooth access in either direction, and the roads around Lagos are well suited to larger vehicles. With Yescapa, you hire your campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across the Algarve, which means flexible pick-up points and first-hand tips on the best beaches and overnight spots. It is a practical, peer-to-peer way to discover Lagos and the wider western Algarve at your own pace.
Lagos enjoys a long season of warm, sunny weather that stretches from April through October. The Festa em Lagos music festival in late August fills the town with live performances, while the Feira Medieval de Lagos in early September transforms the old quarter with costumed parades and craft stalls. Spring and early summer are ideal for campervan touring, with quieter campsites and comfortable driving conditions. Summer is the most popular period, so booking your motorhome on Yescapa well ahead gives you the widest choice from local owners. Autumn brings pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds — perfect for unhurried coastal exploration.
Lagos is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 85 km north-west along the Rota Vicentina to Aljezur, allowing 2–4 days. Stop at Praia da Arrifana for its sheltered surf beach and visit the ruins of Aljezur Castle above the village. Campervan parking is available near most beaches, though spaces fill early in summer.
A short 18 km drive east brings you to Portimão in 1–3 days. Explore the Museu de Portimão in the old sardine cannery and taste freshly grilled fish along the riverside. Motorhome service points are available near Praia da Rocha, making this an easy first outing.
Cover 160 km north-west over 3–6 days through the Alentejo coast. Pause at Zambujeira do Mar for its clifftop views and Porto Covo for a swim in sheltered coves. The roads are quiet and well surfaced, with several campervan-friendly aires along the route.
Drive 190 km north-east over 4–6 days into the Alentejo interior. Visit the Roman Temple of Évora and the Chapel of Bones at Igreja de São Francisco. Roads widen once you leave the coast, and Évora has designated motorhome parking near the old walls.
This 290 km route north takes 5–8 days if you savour the stops. Detour to Setúbal for fresh seafood at the Mercado do Livramento, then cross the Ponte 25 de Abril into Lisbon. Campervan overnight spots are plentiful in the Arrábida Natural Park along the way.
Just 33 km west, Sagres is perfect for a 1–3 day trip from Lagos. Stand at Cabo de São Vicente, mainland Europe's south-western tip, and explore the Fortaleza de Sagres. Parking areas near the fortress can accommodate larger vehicles, though arrive early in peak season.

Lagos and its surroundings offer a good mix of coastal and countryside campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, modern shower blocks, and dedicated hardstanding pitches for larger vehicles. Several are within walking distance of beaches, and a few sit in quieter inland spots among olive and carob trees — ideal if you prefer a calmer base for exploring the western Algarve.
Lagos has several car parks that can accommodate larger vehicles, though spaces for motorhomes are limited in the narrow old-town streets. Overnight parking outside designated areas is not permitted within the city centre, so plan ahead. The marina area and peripheral car parks offer the best options for campervan and motorhome drivers. Always check height barriers before entering underground or covered facilities.
First let me say that Ricardo is a great owner, he was very good at explaining everything to us, gave advice on the trip and was always available to answer any questions we had. He even was understanding of our delayed return. 5/5 The van is as described in the ad, working perfectely, comfortable to drive worh all the amenities one would need in a van. We traveled all around portugal and overall enjoyed our time bery much. Definitely recommend.
Absolutely loved staying in Alfreds campervan. The decor was beautiful. It had everything we needed, a perfect space for two people for time in nature travelling. It was so good having a fridge on the road. He answered any questions I had and the pick up/ drop off was great. Would definitely love to rent it again in the future when we come back to Spain. Thank you!
Patrick was very friendly and went above and beyond his duty to make sure everything went smoothly. He even took us to the station after we dropped the van off. We would highly recommend him.
Foi tudo ótimo! Desde a efetivação do aluguer até ao momento da devolução e ainda depois.
Communication with Guillaume the owner was excellent. Always available to answer questions and give advice about travel destinations. The campervan was a perfect size for our first experience of this type of holiday. We used sites for our 7 night travel experience which worked well with electric/topping up water etc. Overall a great experience and would use this owner again.
Everything went smooth during the whole pick up and return process. The van has seen some life but everything was clean and in great working condition + the price was very competitive when comparing to anything else available at the time. Very enjoyable trip with the van, highly recommended
