Faro's Roman ruins at Mileu sit beneath the modern city centre, with mosaics dating back to the 1st century AD still visible just steps from the marina. As the capital of the Algarve, Faro combines a compact old town — the Cidade Velha — with a thriving waterfront and easy access to some of southern Portugal's finest coastline. Wander through the Arco da Vila, the neoclassical gateway leading into cobbled streets lined with orange trees, and visit the Sé Catedral de Faro for panoramic rooftop views across the Ria Formosa Natural Park. The park itself stretches over 18,000 hectares of lagoons, salt marshes and barrier islands, and you can catch a ferry from Faro to the sandy shores of Ilha Deserta. Culture lovers will enjoy the Museu Municipal de Faro, housed in a 16th-century convent, while the Igreja do Carmo and its famous Capela dos Ossos offer a more unusual stop. Lagos is roughly 80 km to the west, and the Spanish border at Ayamonte sits just 55 km east, making Faro a superb base for exploring in every direction. The flat terrain around the city and well-maintained EN125 road make driving a motorhome straightforward, even for first-timers. With Yescapa, you hire your campervan directly from local owners in the Algarve, which means flexible pick-up points and insider tips on the best spots to park up along the coast.
Faro enjoys warm weather from April through to October, making it ideal for a campervan trip across the Algarve. May and June are particularly pleasant — long days, comfortable temperatures and plenty of space at local campsites. If you visit in August, you can catch the Festa da Ria Formosa, a lively food and music festival celebrating the lagoon's seafood heritage. Autumn brings quieter roads and golden light, perfect for a relaxed motorhome tour. With Yescapa, you can often find better hire rates outside peak summer, as local owners set their own prices. Book a few weeks ahead for July and August to secure your preferred vehicle in Faro.
Faro is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 80 km west from Faro along the Algarve coast to Lagos, a historic port town with dramatic sea cliffs. Stop at Albufeira for its lively marina and Carvoeiro for its golden cove beaches. Allow 3 to 6 days to enjoy the route at a relaxed pace. Campervan parking is well signposted near most beaches.
This 130 km drive from Faro takes you to the southwestern tip of mainland Europe. Visit the Fortaleza de Sagres and the lighthouse at Cabo de São Vicente. Pause in Luz for a swim and Salema for fresh seafood. A motorhome-friendly aire near Sagres makes overnighting easy. Plan 3 to 6 days for the full trip.
Travel 200 km northwest from Faro into the rolling plains of the Alentejo to reach Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage city. Stop at Beja for its medieval castle and Monsaraz for whitewashed hilltop views. Roads are wide and quiet, ideal for campervans. Allow 5 to 8 days to explore the countryside properly.
Cover 300 km north from Faro to Portugal's capital, Lisbon. Break the journey at Setúbal for dolphin-watching in the Sado Estuary and Comporta for its unspoilt rice-paddy beaches. Campsites along the route welcome motorhomes with full hook-ups. A 5 to 8 day itinerary lets you savour each stop.
Just 30 km east of Faro, Tavira is a charming riverside town with a Roman bridge and over 30 churches. Take the ferry to Ilha de Tavira for quiet sandy beaches. This short campervan trip suits 1 to 4 days and is perfect if you prefer a slower pace. Parking near the old town is straightforward.
Drive 55 km west from Faro to Silves, the former Moorish capital of the Algarve. Explore the red sandstone Castelo de Silves and the Museu Municipal de Arqueologia. Detour to São Bartolomeu de Messines for a riverside walk. Allow 2 to 4 days and look for shaded pitches at nearby campsites.

The Faro area offers a good mix of coastal and countryside campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, modern shower blocks and dedicated pitches for larger vehicles. Several are set close to the Ria Formosa lagoon, giving you direct access to nature trails and birdwatching. Whether you prefer a site right in Faro or a quieter spot in the surrounding Algarve, you will find facilities to match your needs.
Faro has several parking areas that can accommodate larger vehicles, though spaces in the old town are limited. Overnight parking in a campervan or motorhome is generally tolerated in designated car parks outside the centre, but always check local signage. Arrive early during summer months to secure a spot near the waterfront. A waste disposal point is available at the municipal campsite for those passing through.
I highly recommend renting from Handy! The camper van was absolute perfection for our family road trip with two young children, and its condition was top-notch. At pickup, Handy was incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and accommodating, taking the time to explain all the various systems and how to best operate the vehicle. He was also super responsive and helpful whenever I had quick questions during our trip. I couldn't have asked for a better host or vehicle. Thank you, Handy!
very good experience with the owner Luis. I recommend
Esperienza positiva
