Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Haute Savoie

Haute Savoie — a region worth exploring

Haute-Savoie is home to Mont Blanc, western Europe's highest peak at 4,808 metres, making it one of the most dramatic backdrops you could wake up to in a campervan. The department stretches from the shores of Lake Annecy — often called Europe's cleanest lake — to the bustling border town of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, a distance of roughly 65 km through winding alpine valleys. Head north and you reach Évian-les-Bains on the southern shore of Lake Geneva, about 95 km from Annecy, where the landscape softens into rolling vineyards and lakeside promenades. In between, the Aravis mountain range offers spectacular driving routes past the Col des Aravis and the charming village of La Clusaz, while the Plateau des Glières draws history enthusiasts to its Resistance memorial. Haute-Savoie rewards slow travel — pull over at a mountain farm for Reblochon cheese, park up beside a turquoise river, or spend a morning exploring the medieval old town of Annecy itself. The roads here suit both compact campervans on tighter cols and larger motorhomes on the main valley routes. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners spread across Haute-Savoie, so you can pick up a vehicle close to your starting point and set off without delay. Whether you are planning a week around the lakes or a fortnight crossing high passes, the peer-to-peer model means more choice and often better value than traditional agencies.

Best time to visit

June to September is the prime window for exploring Haute-Savoie by campervan, when mountain passes such as the Col de la Colombière are fully open and campsites run at full capacity. The Fête du Lac in Annecy, held on the first Saturday of August, lights up the lake with one of Europe's largest firework displays — well worth timing your trip around. Autumn brings golden larch forests and quieter roads, ideal for a more relaxed motorhome tour. Winter travellers can still enjoy lower-altitude routes and thermal towns like Évian-les-Bains. Booking through Yescapa during shoulder months often means lower hire prices thanks to flexible peer-to-peer pricing set by individual owners.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Haute Savoie

Haute-Savoie is served by the A40 and A41 motorways, both of which are toll roads operated by the ATMB and AREA networks. You pay at toll booths by card or cash, and a journey from Annecy to Chamonix via the A40 costs around €10–€15. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed in a higher toll category, so keep your vehicle documents handy. Speed limits for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are 110 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on single carriageways. Mountain sections include tunnels and steep gradients — the Mont Blanc Tunnel has height and weight restrictions, so check dimensions before setting off. Rest areas with motorhome-friendly parking are well signposted along major routes.
