Why choose Clermont Ferrand for your road trip

Clermont Ferrand — a city worth exploring

Clermont-Ferrand sits at the heart of the Chaîne des Puys, a UNESCO-listed chain of 80 volcanic domes that shaped the city's skyline and its distinctive dark lava-stone architecture. The Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption, built entirely from local Volvic stone, rises in striking black against the green plateau. Wander through Place de Jaude, the bustling main square, before heading to the Musée Bargoin for its remarkable collection of pre-Roman textiles and archaeology. Families enjoy the interactive exhibits at Vulcania, a volcanology theme park just 15 km north-west. For a rewarding day out, the Puy de Dôme summit — reachable by the Panoramique des Dômes rack railway — offers sweeping views across the Massif Central. Vichy is only 56 km to the north, while the medieval town of Issoire lies 36 km south, making both easy additions to any touring itinerary. The surrounding roads wind through open volcanic plateaux and forested valleys, with plenty of well-signed laybys and service points suited to larger vehicles. Hiring a campervan or motorhome through Yescapa connects you directly with local owners in the Auvergne area, so you benefit from insider tips on the best routes and overnight spots. With a campervan as your base, you can explore Clermont-Ferrand at your own pace and set off into the volcanoes whenever the mood takes you.

Best time to visit

Clermont-Ferrand comes alive from May to September, when the volcanic landscapes are at their greenest and outdoor activities are in full swing. The Festival International du Court Métrage in February draws film lovers from across Europe, while the Europavox music festival in late June fills the city with live performances. Summer is the most popular season for campervan travel, so booking your hire on Yescapa early gives you the widest choice of vehicles from local owners at competitive peer-to-peer prices. Autumn in Clermont-Ferrand brings golden colours to the Chaîne des Puys and quieter roads — ideal for a relaxed motorhome tour through the region.

Fantastic rental, they were so helpful and got us all set up for our first ever campervan trip. The van was spotless and practically brand new. Everything was so easy to use and we just sent up the bed each day as we set off for each new place.

We absolutely loved our time with Javier’s Fiat campervan and would happily recommend it. From the outset, Javier was incredibly helpful and accommodating, answering all our questions and requests, arriving exactly when agreed and giving us an excellent, thorough handover. The van itself was brilliantly equipped, stylish, comfortable and surprisingly spacious, with loads of clever storage. It genuinely felt like a little home on wheels rather than simply a rental camper. Another big plus is just how user-friendly everything is. Even if you have little or no previous campervan experience, you could feel completely confident using it. Javier provided clear instructions for all the important systems — water, pumps, lighting, electrics and general operation — and everything was incredibly straightforward and simple to use. Nothing felt complicated or intimidating. We travelled both on-grid and completely off-grid, and it handled both perfectly. The solar and battery system worked brilliantly, the fridge stayed perfectly cold, and the enormous water capacity was a massive bonus — we showered normally throughout our trip and never managed to run out of water! And the shower itself deserves a special mention: such a clever use of space and genuinely one of our favourite features. On the road it was equally impressive. It drove really well, was surprisingly economical on fuel, and its size was absolutely perfect for travelling around Spain. We took it through little roads and villages without any drama and could generally park it in a normal car-sized space — a huge advantage compared with travelling in a large motorhome. The interior design is super chic and homely, the layout has been really well thought through, and there was more than enough space and storage for everything we needed. Overall, fantastic value for money, a great owner and a fabulous little campervan that gave us exactly the adventure we wanted. Whether you’re an experienced campervan traveller or trying one for the first time, it’s an incredibly easy and enjoyable van to travel in. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would absolutely rent it again. Highly recommended — thank you, Javier! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
