Why hire a campervan or motorhome in North Island

North Island — a region worth exploring

New Zealand's North Island stretches across roughly 113,700 square kilometres and is home to the country's largest city, Auckland, as well as the capital, Wellington — two cities separated by about 645 km of diverse terrain. From the geothermal wonderland of Rotorua, where bubbling mud pools and erupting geysers sit right beside the town centre, to the volcanic plateau of Tongariro National Park, the North Island packs an extraordinary range of landscapes into a single road trip. The Coromandel Peninsula offers golden-sand beaches and native bush walks, while the Bay of Islands to the north is dotted with 144 subtropical islands perfect for kayaking and dolphin watching. Head inland and you will find the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, where thousands of tiny bioluminescent creatures light up underground rivers. The drive from Auckland to Napier covers around 420 km and takes you through rolling farmland into the Art Deco capital of the southern hemisphere. Roads across the North Island are generally well-maintained two-lane highways, with plenty of freedom camping spots and holiday parks suited to larger vehicles. Whether you fancy a compact campervan for winding coastal roads or a fully equipped motorhome for a longer family adventure, Yescapa connects you directly with local owners across the North Island, giving you more choice and often better value than traditional hire options. It is an ideal way to explore at your own pace.

Best time to visit

The North Island enjoys a mild maritime climate, making it a year-round destination for campervan travel. Summer, from December to February, is the busiest period — book ahead if you plan to attend the Napier Art Deco Festival, held each February. Autumn (March to May) brings warm days and fewer crowds, ideal for exploring Tongariro and the Coromandel. Winter is perfect for soaking in Rotorua's hot springs. With Yescapa, you can often find better hire rates during the shoulder months, as peer-to-peer pricing tends to be more flexible than commercial fleets. Whenever you visit, the North Island delivers.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in North Island

The North Island has no toll roads for general traffic, though the Northern Gateway Toll Road north of Auckland charges a small fee payable online. Speed limits for motorhomes and campervans under 3,500 kg match standard car limits — 100 km/h on the open road and 50 km/h in urban areas. Vehicles over 3,500 kg are limited to 90 km/h. State highways are mostly two-lane roads with regular passing lanes. Rest areas with toilets and rubbish bins appear frequently along major routes. Watch for one-lane bridges in rural areas, particularly in Northland and the Coromandel — give way signs indicate priority.

We had an amazing trip! Rafaela and Carina were so kind, and we couldn’t recommend their van enough 🤩🙏🏼 The van had everything we needed for a proper “van life” experience, and you can also stay at campsites whenever you want!

We hired a motorhome from Cemil for a week to travel around Switzerland. We also visited France, Germany and Liechtenstein. Before the trip Cemil was helpful and responded to questions promptly. On the day of pick up he met us at the train station and the handover was smooth and quick. At the end if the trip it was also a very smooth transition and Cemil kindly drove us back to the airport. The van was great - very easy to drive and everything worked perfectly. All tolls and insurance were covered. We were very happy with the motorhome and would highly recommend renting from Cemil.

We had a great experience hiring this motorhome. Everything went smoothly and we had absolutely zero issues throughout our trip. Fernando kept us informed about everything from the beginning and was very friendly and helpful. He was also very flexible with both the pickup and drop-off times, which made everything much easier. The location is perfect, especially if you're arriving via Prague Airport. We travelled all the way to Hungary and back to Poland, staying at several off-grid locations along the way. We had an amazing time at Lake Balaton in Hungary and also loved our stay at the Pod Opaleńcem campsite in Świeradów-Zdrój, Poland. We would definitely recommend this motorhome hire and would happily rent from Fernando again!
