Why choose Hastings for your road trip

Hastings — a city worth exploring

Hastings sits at the heart of the Hawke's Bay region, where over 200 hectares of vineyards and orchards stretch across the Heretaunga Plains — one of New Zealand's most productive growing areas. The city's Art Deco architecture, rebuilt after the devastating 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake, gives its streetscape a distinctive character you won't find elsewhere. Stroll through the Hastings City Art Gallery for rotating exhibitions of contemporary New Zealand art, or head to Splash Planet, a family-friendly water park open each summer. Just 20 km north-east, Napier offers its own Art Deco precinct and the National Aquarium of New Zealand, while Te Mata Peak, roughly 10 km south-east, rewards you with panoramic views across the plains to the Pacific coast. The surrounding landscape is ideal for touring by road — wide, well-maintained highways connect coastal settlements, wine trails and forest parks, so you can move at your own pace without worrying about tight mountain passes. With Yescapa, you hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners in the Hawke's Bay area, which means you benefit from insider tips on the best freedom-camping spots, seasonal fruit-picking routes and cellar-door recommendations that only a local would know.

Best time to visit

Hastings enjoys a warm, dry climate that makes it a year-round destination. Summer, from December to March, is perfect for exploring the coast and visiting Splash Planet before it closes for the season. The Hastings Blossom Parade, held each September, celebrates the region's orchards with colourful floats and live music. Autumn brings harvest festivals and quieter campsites, while winter is ideal for wine-trail touring without the crowds. Book your campervan through Yescapa early for the December–February peak, when local owners list a wider range of vehicles and you can often find competitive hire rates through the peer-to-peer platform.

Great experience renting the Jimny. The owners were brilliant to deal with from start to finish, and the Jeep was in excellent condition. It was perfect for exploring the Algarve. Would definitely recommend and would happily rent from them again!

Clean, well-maintained vehicle that gave us so many great memories! We traveled to many places and drove around 900 km ourselves, and it handled everything flawlessly. Thanks to its size, parking was super easy, we could fit anywhere, and we were able to sleep in spots where a different kind of campervan wouldn't have worked. It is fully equipped with everything provided, even extra games for beach days! The bed and bedding were clean, and it has a really comfortable mattress. The owners were super nice and sweet. Everything went smoothly during both pickup and drop-off, and they were always there to help whenever we needed it, even when we got a bit lost! 😅 Plus point that they were super cool and easy to talk to. P.S. The AC works like a charm!
