Lombardy stretches from the snow-capped peaks of the Rhaetian Alps in the north to the fertile plains of the Po Valley, making it Italy's most geographically diverse region for a road trip. Lake Como alone has a shoreline of roughly 170 km, winding past elegant villas such as Villa del Balbianello and the town of Bellagio, while Lake Garda's eastern shore sits just 130 km east of Milan. Between the two, you can explore the medieval walled city of Bergamo Alta, the Roman ruins of Brescia — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and the Renaissance splendour of Mantua, birthplace of the Gonzaga dynasty. The Stelvio National Park, bordering Switzerland, offers high-altitude passes and dramatic hairpin roads that reward confident drivers with extraordinary mountain panoramas. Heading south, the Certosa di Pavia monastery and the rice paddies of Lomellina reveal a quieter, rural side of the region. Lombardy's well-maintained motorway network connects these highlights efficiently, yet many of the most memorable stretches are the smaller lakeside and valley roads ideally suited to a campervan. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners based across Lombardy — from Milan to the Alpine foothills — giving you a wide choice of campervans and motorhomes at peer-to-peer prices, so you can tailor your vehicle to the route you have in mind.
Late spring through early autumn is ideal for exploring Lombardy by campervan. May and June bring warm, settled weather perfect for lakeside drives around Como and Iseo, while the Stelvio Pass typically opens fully by mid-June. Summer is peak season — book early on Yescapa to lock in the best peer-to-peer rates. In September, the Franciacorta wine harvest is in full swing, and campsites around the lakes are quieter yet still open. Even in April, the Salone del Mobile in Milan draws visitors, and the lower valleys are already pleasant for touring in a motorhome. Lombardy rewards you in every season.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travellers.
This 350 km route climbs from Lecco through the Valtellina valley to Tirano, then crosses the Bernina Pass into Switzerland before looping back. Stop at Bormio's thermal baths and sample Bresaola in Sondrio. Best suited to campervans — some Alpine stretches are narrow.
Cover 400 km across Lombardy's famous lakes — Maggiore, Como, and Lugano — over five to eight days. Pause at Stresa's Borromean Islands and the silk town of Como. Well-serviced campsites along the way make this route ideal for both motorhomes and campervans.
A 550 km journey from the Alpine town of Livigno south through Bergamo and Cremona to Mantua, spanning seven to eleven days. You pass through mountain scenery, Renaissance cities, and the Po Valley's farmland. Plenty of motorhome-friendly stopovers along the route.
Circle Lake Como's 180 km shoreline in three to six days, visiting Varenna, Menaggio, and the gardens of Villa Carlotta. Lakeside roads are winding but well-maintained — a campervan keeps things nimble. Several campsites sit right on the waterfront.
A relaxed 150 km loop over three to five days through Lombardy's premier wine country and along Lake Iseo's western shore. Visit Monte Isola by ferry from Sulzano and taste sparkling wines in Erbusco. Flat vineyard roads suit any campervan or motorhome.
This epic 600 km route takes ten to fifteen days, starting in Ponte di Legno in the high Alps and winding south through Brescia, Cremona, and Pavia to the rice fields of Lomellina. A grand tour of Lombardy's contrasts, with campsites and aires spread along the way.

Lombardy offers a wide spread of campsites, from lakeside pitches with mountain views to quieter spots on the Po Plain. Most sites provide full hook-ups for motorhomes and campervans, along with modern shower blocks, laundry facilities, and Wi-Fi. Around the major lakes you will find well-equipped family sites, while further south, smaller rural campsites give easy access to Lombardy's historic cities and countryside.
Lombardy's motorways are toll roads managed through the Italian Telepass or ticket-based system — you collect a ticket on entry and pay at exit, with cash, card, or prepaid devices accepted. Key routes include the A4 (Milan–Brescia) and the A9 towards Lake Como. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 100 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on dual carriageways. Vehicles over 3 metres wide may face restrictions on some lakeside roads, so check signage carefully. Rest areas with services appear regularly along major routes.
Thank you, Jesús María, for one of our best travel experiences! Great communication before our arrival and warm welcome in Málaga were the perfect start to the trip. The van was fully equipped, and we had an amazing time exploring beautiful Andalusia. It was hard to say goodbye to our little home on wheels, but hopefully we’ll get the chance to take it on another adventure someday! Highly recommended! 🚐⭐️
Zeben was the most amazing and helpful host, always there if needed. The van has the perfect setup and it’s the best way to spend time on the island. Could not recommend more!
Great host,great camper
We had a great trip and a good overall experience with Marco’s campervan. Communication with the owner was very swiftly, both before and during the rental. Campervan also met our standards and was in line with description. We were on the road for 9 days. It was our first experience driving and being on the road with a campervan and we did not experience any issues at all. The van itself was in good condition, and Marco was very available for any questions. Would definitely recommend!
The hire from Franck was perfect for our holiday in the Alsace. It was modern and spacious and very practical. The hiring experience was very easy and Franck was a great host. He assisted us with all our questions and always responded promptly. We would not hesitate in recommending this motorhome for future trips.
Everything like on description and good communication with the owner. We had a lovely time! Thank you :))
