Bergamo sits where the Lombardy plain meets the foothills of the Orobie Alps, its medieval Città Alta perched on a hilltop encircled by 6 km of 16th-century Venetian Walls — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017. A funicular railway connects the lower town to the upper, where Piazza Vecchia opens onto the Palazzo della Ragione and the Cappella Colleoni, a Renaissance masterpiece adorned with marble reliefs. Art lovers can spend hours in the Accademia Carrara, home to works by Botticelli, Raphael and Mantegna, while the GAMeC gallery across the road showcases contemporary pieces. Beyond the old town, the Parco dei Colli di Bergamo offers green trails ideal for a morning walk before hitting the road. Lake Iseo lies just 30 km to the north-east, and Lake Como is roughly 50 km to the north-west, making Bergamo a superb base for exploring the Italian Lakes by campervan. The surrounding roads are well maintained, though some routes climbing into the pre-Alpine valleys narrow considerably — worth noting if you are travelling in a larger motorhome. With Yescapa, you hire directly from local owners in and around Bergamo, which means flexible pick-up points, insider tips on the best routes, and competitive pricing through our peer-to-peer platform. Whether you are planning a lakeside weekend or a longer campervan adventure through Lombardy, Bergamo is a brilliant starting point.
Bergamo enjoys a continental climate with warm summers and crisp winters. May to September is the most popular window, with the Bergamo Jazz Festival in March and the Festa di Sant'Alessandro on 26 August adding local flavour. Summer is ideal for combining the city with a campervan trip to the nearby lakes, so booking your Yescapa hire early is a smart move. Autumn brings harvest festivals across the Bergamo province, quieter roads and pleasant driving conditions. Even in the cooler months, the Città Alta is atmospheric and well worth a visit — and peer-to-peer pricing on Yescapa tends to be especially friendly outside peak season.
Bergamo is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 56 km south-west from Bergamo to Milan, Italy's design and fashion capital. Allow 2 to 4 days to visit the Duomo, the Pinacoteca di Brera and the Navigli canal district. Motorhome parking is available at designated areas on the city outskirts, with metro links into the centre.
A quick 30 km drive north-east from Bergamo brings you to Lake Iseo and the town of Iseo itself. Spend 1 to 3 days exploring Monte Isola — the largest lake island in southern Europe — and the waterfront at Sarnico. Several campsites along the shore welcome campervans.
Drive 120 km north from Bergamo into the Valtellina valley, famous for its vineyards and pizzoccheri pasta. Over 3 to 6 days, stop in Tirano to ride the Bernina Express route and hike around Bormio. Mountain roads are well surfaced but winding — take your time in a campervan.
Bergamo to Verona is a 150 km journey east through the Po Valley. In 3 to 6 days you can tour the Arena di Verona, stroll Piazza delle Erbe and detour to the southern shore of Lake Garda at Peschiera. Motorhome service areas are plentiful along the A4 motorway.
Set off 250 km south-east from Bergamo towards Bologna, the heart of Emilia-Romagna. Over 5 to 8 days, taste Parmigiano-Reggiano in Parma, visit the mosaics of Ravenna and wander Bologna's porticoes. Campervan-friendly stopovers dot the Via Emilia route.
Travel 280 km west from Bergamo to Turin, gateway to Piedmont's wine country. Allow 5 to 8 days to explore the Mole Antonelliana, the Egyptian Museum and the Langhe hills around Alba. Designated motorhome areas near Turin offer hook-ups and easy access to the city centre.

Most campsites near Bergamo are set around the lakes and green hills of the province rather than in the city itself. You will find pitches with electrical hook-ups, fresh-water points, showers and waste-disposal facilities suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Many sites sit on the shores of Lake Iseo or in the surrounding valleys, offering a peaceful base within easy driving distance of Bergamo's Città Alta.
Bergamo's Città Alta is a limited-traffic zone (ZTL), so you will need to park in the lower town or on the outskirts. Several large car parks accommodate bigger vehicles, and overnight stays in designated areas are generally permitted provided you do not set up camp outside the vehicle. Always check signage for height restrictions and time limits. A funicular or local bus can take you up to the old town in minutes.
Communication with the owner was great, van was immaculate, heaps of choice, love the peer to peer concept. Easy to add an extra driver and ID checks were very thorough but straightforward. Changing dates wasn't so easy, the owner was great, but the process at the back end took some manual effort. Teething problems, not a big deal. Main area that needs improving (for me anyway) is the deposit. There was a single line in a table stating Deposit: cash or transfer, that I hadn't seen. The owner asked for the cash or a transfer when we were at the car, which he explained was normal process, but Yescapa could have explained beforehand. I transferred €2000 directly to the owner, which didn't feel comfortable. I had expected this would all be done via Yescapa. I ended up losing €45 in exchange rate variations + fees as well, the owner's bank had challenges which meant it to 5 days to get a lot of cash back. It was lucky we had that amount at hand. I would use Yescapa again. I hope they can tidy up and improve the processes though.
Very easy and open person… all went well , on time and with all the agremants.
Incredible time spent across the south of France with an incredible van! From beach, lakes, mountains and fields, it got me places I didn’t even pre conceive. Can’t speak more highly of my over all experience from van collection at train station to drop off. Drives smoother than my Suzuki jimny and can confirm very 6ft 4 friendly.
We had an amazing experience hiring Eli's campervan! It was perfect for our family of four – myself, my partner, and our two young daughters. The van was spotless, comfortable, and had everything we needed for our trip. It was easy to drive, well-equipped, and made exploring the malaga so much more enjoyable. The owners were friendly, helpful, and made the whole rental process smooth from start to finish. We made some unforgettable family memories and wouldn't hesitate to rent this campervan again. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a fun, comfortable, and hassle-free adventure in Spain. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
We had a great experience. All went smoothly and the camper van was perfect. Mike was very accommodating and communicative throughout and we would recommend highly.
Communication was easy, the vehicle is in good condition and looks like the shared photos. Has the amenities needed and comfy bedding. Having the solar charger is a plus given we didn't drive much, so there was no need for recharging with electricity.
