Coimbra's University, founded in 1290, is one of the oldest in continuous operation in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Perched above the Mondego River in central Portugal, the city blends centuries of academic tradition with lively streets, Fado music and remarkable architecture. The Joanine Library, housed within the university complex, holds over 200,000 volumes in gilded Baroque halls. Beyond the hilltop campus, you can wander through the Machado de Castro National Museum, built over a Roman cryptoporticus, or stroll the gardens of Quinta das Lágrimas, where legend places the tragic love story of Inês de Castro. The Monastery of Santa Cruz in the lower town shelters the tombs of Portugal's first two kings. Coimbra sits roughly 120 km south of Porto and about 195 km north of Lisbon, making it an ideal base for exploring the country by road. The surrounding landscape is gentle and motorhome-friendly, with well-maintained routes leading to the Silver Coast beaches in the west and the Serra da Lousã hills to the south-east. Hiring a campervan through Yescapa connects you directly with local owners who know the best routes and overnight spots, so you can set off at your own pace without the formality of a traditional hire company. With a motorhome collected in Coimbra, the entire centre of Portugal opens up for your next adventure.
Coimbra is enjoyable year-round, though late spring and early autumn are especially pleasant for touring by campervan. In May the Queima das Fitas festival fills the city with parades and music as students celebrate the end of the academic year. July and August bring warm, dry days ideal for combining a Coimbra visit with coastal detours. Through Yescapa you can often find better rates on motorhome hire outside peak summer, and campsites in the region tend to be quieter from September onwards. Book ahead for June to August to secure the vehicle that suits you best.
Coimbra is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 60 km north-west from Coimbra to Aveiro, known for its colourful moliceiro boats and Art Nouveau architecture. Stop at the Bairrada wine region along the way to sample local sparkling wines. Aveiro's Ria lagoon offers waterside campervan parking with easy access to Costa Nova's striped beach houses.
Drive 80 km south-east from Coimbra to Tomar, home to the Convent of Christ, a UNESCO-listed Templar fortress. En route, pause at the Castelo de Almourol on its tiny river island. Motorhome parking is available near Tomar's Mouchão Park, a shaded spot beside the Nabão River.
Follow the road 130 km west from Coimbra to the Silver Coast, taking in the medieval walled town of Óbidos and the surf beaches of Nazaré. Figueira da Foz makes a great first stop with its wide sandy beach. Several campsites along this stretch welcome campervans and offer full hook-ups.
Cover the 195 km south from Coimbra to Lisbon via Fátima's famous sanctuary and the limestone formations of the Serra de Aire Natural Park. In Lisbon, explore Belém Tower and the Alfama district. Plan your arrival for a weekday morning to find motorhome-friendly parking more easily near the capital.
Travel 310 km north from Coimbra through Porto's Ribeira quarter and on into the terraced Douro Valley. Visit the port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia and the viewpoint at São Leonardo de Galafura. Campervan stopovers with river views are plentiful between Peso da Régua and Pinhão.
Head 400 km north-east from Coimbra into Portugal's highest mountain range, Serra da Estrela, then continue to the remote Trás-os-Montes region. Explore the glacial valley of Zêzere and the walled village of Belmonte. Mountain roads are well surfaced, though allow extra time for winding stretches.

The area around Coimbra offers a good mix of riverside, coastal and countryside campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, modern shower blocks and dedicated pitches for larger vehicles. If you prefer a beachside setting, the coast at Figueira da Foz is under an hour's drive west of Coimbra, while inland options sit among pine forests and river valleys.
Coimbra has several large car parks that can accommodate motorhomes and campervans, particularly around the lower town and near the river. Overnight parking in public spaces is generally tolerated outside the historic centre, but always check local signage. For longer stays, the municipal campsite offers a dedicated motorhome service area. Avoid narrow streets in the Alta district, as height and width restrictions apply to larger vehicles.
Ottimo camper, semplice da guidare. Esperienza positiva
Beyond happy with the whole experience. The motorhome was very comfy and had everything we needed for our little girls camping trip. More importantly the owners were extremely friendly and beyond helpful at all times with the vehicle, the routes, the airport pickups and dropp offs and many many more things! All and all very happy with this experience!
The experience was seemles from start to finish. Handover was very straightforward with all the major information required exchanged. Fabian the owner remained available during the trip for any issues that may arise. The vehicle was as advertised and in very good condition. Very nice camping caravan, equipped with everything that you could need. The return process was straightforward when returning vehicle. Also my car was kept securley stored at the location for arrival and drop off. Overall very good experience and i would highly recommend and use again in the future.
We really enjoyed our travels around Brittany in Clarisse's camper van. It was comfortable and easy to drive and had everything we needed for our holiday. Clarisse explained everything clearly to us before we set off.
A really positive experience from start to finish.
