Why choose Castellón for your road trip

Castellón — a city worth exploring

Castellón de la Plana sits at the foot of the Desert de les Palmes natural park, with its historic centre lying just 4 km from the Mediterranean shore at El Grau. The city's octagonal bell tower, El Fadrí, rises 58 metres above the Plaza Mayor and has stood independent of the Concatedral de Santa María since the 15th century. Stroll through the Ribalta Park, a lush botanical garden laid out in 1868, before heading to the Museu de Belles Arts to explore one of the finest ceramics collections on the Valencian coast. The Planetari de Castelló, one of only a handful in the region, offers family-friendly shows year-round. Inland, the Sierra de Espadán natural park begins roughly 30 km to the west, while the walled town of Peñíscola perches on its rocky headland about 70 km to the north. Flat coastal roads and well-signed motorways make the area easy to navigate in a larger vehicle, and the surrounding orange groves give way to mountain passes that reward a slower pace. With Yescapa, you hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners who know the best overnight spots along the Costa del Azahar. Peer-to-peer hire means competitive prices and personal recommendations you will not find elsewhere, making Castellón an ideal base for exploring eastern Spain at your own rhythm.

Best time to visit

Castellón enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate that suits campervan travel for most of the year. The Magdalena festival in March fills the city with processions, bonfires and fireworks over nine days, while the Festes de Sant Pere in late June celebrates the fishing quarter at El Grau with open-air concerts and paella contests. Summer is the busiest season along the coast, so booking your motorhome through Yescapa early lets you lock in the best peer-to-peer rates. Spring and autumn bring comfortable driving temperatures and quieter campsites, perfect for exploring the nearby sierras. Winter remains mild, with daytime highs around 15 °C, ideal for cycling or hiking without the crowds.
