Hamburg's network of canals and waterways totals over 2,500 bridges — more than Venice, Amsterdam, and London combined — making it one of Europe's most water-rich cities to explore by road. As Germany's second-largest city and a federal state in its own right, Hamburg offers a remarkable blend of maritime heritage, green spaces, and cultural landmarks. From the UNESCO-listed Speicherstadt warehouse district to the striking Elbphilharmonie concert hall on the waterfront, there is plenty to discover at your own pace. The Alster lakes sit right in the city centre, while the vast Stadtpark and Planten un Blomen gardens provide welcome breathing space. Head south-east and you reach the Lüneburg Heath in roughly 70 km, a landscape of purple heather and quiet villages ideal for a campervan getaway. Travel 120 km north-west and you arrive at Cuxhaven on the North Sea coast, where the Wadden Sea National Park awaits. Hamburg's position as a gateway between the North Sea and Baltic coasts makes it a superb starting point for longer motorhome tours across northern Germany. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners based across the Hamburg region, choosing from a wide range of vehicles to suit your travel style and budget. Whether you are planning a weekend escape or a multi-week adventure, peer-to-peer hiring means more flexibility and a personal touch from the very first message.
Hamburg comes alive from May to September, when long daylight hours and mild temperatures make campervan touring a real pleasure. The Hamburg Port Anniversary in May — the world's largest harbour festival — draws over a million visitors with ship parades and live music along the Elbe. In December, the city's famous Christmas markets, including the Rathausmarkt market, create a magical winter atmosphere. Book early for the summer months, as this is peak season for Hamburg and the nearby coasts. With Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing often means better value even during busier periods, and you can find motorhome options year-round from local owners across Hamburg.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travellers.
This gentle 180 km loop from Hamburg winds through the Altes Land, northern Europe's largest fruit-growing region, and along the Elbe marshes to Stade. Ideal for campervans, with farm shops and riverside stops throughout. Allow 3–6 days to savour the pace.
Cover 250 km across the Lüneburg Heath, stopping in the medieval salt town of Lüneburg and the family-friendly Heide Park in Soltau. Quiet campervan pitches dot the heathland, and the route suits all vehicle sizes. Best enjoyed over 3–6 relaxed days.
Follow 400 km of coastline from Hamburg to Cuxhaven and on through the Wadden Sea National Park to Husum. Motorhomes are welcome at well-equipped coastal campsites. Allow 5–8 days to explore tidal flats, lighthouses, and fresh seafood harbours.
This 350 km route heads north-east from Hamburg to Lübeck's UNESCO old town, then along the Baltic coast through Timmendorfer Strand to Travemünde. Plenty of seaside campervan stops make 5–8 days a comfortable timeframe for this coastal circuit.
A 600 km tour linking Hamburg, Bremen, and the East Frisian Islands coast before looping back via Celle. Suits motorhomes and campervans alike, with diverse landscapes from heathland to marshes. Plan 7–11 days to do it justice.
At 700 km, this route explores Schleswig-Holstein from Kiel and the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal to the island of Sylt and the Schlei inlet. Campsites cater well to larger motorhomes. Set aside 8–15 days to enjoy both North Sea and Baltic shores at a leisurely pace.

Thank you, Jesús María, for one of our best travel experiences! Great communication before our arrival and warm welcome in Málaga were the perfect start to the trip. The van was fully equipped, and we had an amazing time exploring beautiful Andalusia. It was hard to say goodbye to our little home on wheels, but hopefully we’ll get the chance to take it on another adventure someday! Highly recommended! 🚐⭐️
Zeben was the most amazing and helpful host, always there if needed. The van has the perfect setup and it’s the best way to spend time on the island. Could not recommend more!
Great host,great camper
We had a great trip and a good overall experience with Marco’s campervan. Communication with the owner was very swiftly, both before and during the rental. Campervan also met our standards and was in line with description. We were on the road for 9 days. It was our first experience driving and being on the road with a campervan and we did not experience any issues at all. The van itself was in good condition, and Marco was very available for any questions. Would definitely recommend!
The hire from Franck was perfect for our holiday in the Alsace. It was modern and spacious and very practical. The hiring experience was very easy and Franck was a great host. He assisted us with all our questions and always responded promptly. We would not hesitate in recommending this motorhome for future trips.
Everything like on description and good communication with the owner. We had a lovely time! Thank you :))
